Tottenham vs. Nottingham Forest exposed the problem Spurs can no longer ignore
Although Tottenham Hotspur technically experienced an improvement on Matchday 3 of the 2026/27 Premier League season in the sense that they drew instead of losing, their 0-0 result against a Nottingham Forest side that should be inferior on paper is a sobering reminder of how far Spurs have to go before they are better than 17th in the Premier League - the place they are still literally occupying in the league table.
In their three games to start the 2026/27 campaign, Spurs have not scored a single goal. Not one. They had issues creating clear cut chances and putting them away when they did get them, and this has been a consistent theme through these three games.
Tottenham knew they had to upgrade their attack this summer after how putrid they were offensively last season, with Richarlison's 11 goals the only remote threat in the side. So Spurs went out and bought Savio and Omar Marmoush. But they were unable to close deals for their ideal target, Cody Gakpo, or his best Plan B option, Iliman Ndiaye, instead punting on Mykhaylo Mudryk on loan.
Tottenham have the same problem they did last year
Spurs still need Mohammed Kudus to return to full fitness and Savio and Marmoush to integrate into the new side, while the No. 10 position remains a huge hole with James Maddison rejoining an injured list that already contains Wilson Odobert and Xavi Simons with torn ACLs.
But all of those are mere excuses that belie the overall malaise that underlies Tottenham Hotspur as an attack. Roberto De Zerbi was hired to fix things up tactically, and while he can only do so much when players are missing sitters or not threading the right passes, it is hard not to watch Mathys Tel fall over himself or Omar Marmoush squander great opportunities to score or assist and think that the problem is mor pervasive.
There is an understanding that Tottenham will inevitably get better offensively, but Spurs supporters don't just want to sit there and wait for it. They want to start seeing some real results now, because the points they drop to start the season do count just as much as the points that are dropped later on - and that matters a lot in the tight margins of a European race, which is where Spurs aim to be after spending around 400 million pounds on new players.
Tottenham have yet to solve their attacking ills of the 2025/26 season, and time and new players integrating are not the only solution to solve. Spurs created more chances and had more possession in good areas against Nottingham Forest with Sandro Tonali and Rodrigo Bentancur, as well as the center backs, playing well, yet they still could not score.
