Van Hecke Transfer News: Spurs first out of the blocks as race with Liverpool & Chelsea hots up

Jan Paul van Hecke is a man in demand – and Tottenham Hotspur are at the front of the queue.

Brighton and Hove Albion’s star centre-back is attracting interest from a host of elite Premier League clubs, with Liverpool and Chelsea believed to be keen on the highly-rated Dutchman.

It is Spurs who have made the first move, though, having reportedly had their initial approach knocked back by the Seagulls.

They will surely return with an improved bid before long, but is North London the best place for Van Hecke to continue his rapid development?

We consider how he would fit in at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, while assessing his other potential destinations…

De Zerbi reunion

It isn’t hard to see why Van Hecke and Tottenham could be an ideal match.

After all, Spurs are currently managed by Roberto De Zerbi, who oversaw the 25-year-old’s rise to prominence while in charge of Brighton for just under two seasons from 2022-2024.

A young Van Hecke featured sparingly in the Italian’s first partial campaign, before becoming a mainstay in his side the following year – racking up 39 appearances across all competitions as the Seagulls reached the Europa League Round of 16.

De Zerbi’s teams plays a distinctive brand of high-possession football that relies on defenders who are composed on the ball and look to progress play. He was able to rely on the Netherlands international to do just that at Brighton, so is understandably keen on a reunion.

And despite Tottenham also reportedly showing interest in Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi this summer, Van Hecke would have a clear route into their starting line-up under a manager who knows all about his talents.

Lest we forget, this is a Spurs side that leaked an eye-watering 57 league goals last season – a figure only beaten by relegated trio Burnley (75), Wolves (68) and West Ham United (65).

Their current defensive options are also completely different profiles of centre-back to Van Hecke, who displayed a willingness to take risks with the ball to kickstart attacking moves last season.

Statistical comparisons between the former NAC Breda man and Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven (Spurs’ two most-used central defenders in the Premier League last season) need to be caveated by their respective teams’ stylistic differences.

But it is nonetheless notable that Van Hecke attempted far more ambitious passes than the Tottenham duo. He attempted 13.99 passes into the final third per 90, for example, compared with just 7.79 and 4.7 for Romero and Van de Ven, respectively.

That’s true of attempted long passes, too, with Van Hecke’s 7.9 per 90 in the Premier League dwarfing Romero’s 4.62 and Van de Ven’s 4.5.

This isn’t to say that the current Spurs pair can’t adapt to De Zerbi’s approach, more that Van Hecke is ready-made for the system.

The durability of the Seagulls’ No.6 should also appeal to a club that was ravaged by injuries last term.

While Romero hasn’t featured in more than 23 top-flight matches in either of the last two seasons, Van Hecke can boast tallies of 34 and 36 during those same domestic campaigns.

Perhaps the only question for Brighton’s £70 million-rated man is whether De Zerbi will be able to turn around a club that has been in disarray for some time, recording embarrassingly low consecutive 17th-place finishes.

If he has faith in his old boss to do so then a move to N17 feels increasingly likely.

Liverpool link-up?

Anfield has previously been mooted as a potential destination for Van Hecke, but the sacking of manager Arne Slot may have complicated proceedings on that front.

It’s certainly not impossible that Liverpool will retain their interest, though, if sporting director Richard Hughes still believes he could be a key part of the club’s ongoing defensive rebuild.

Teenager Giovanni Leoni should come back into the picture once he recovers from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, but there is a vacancy in their rearguard with Ibrahima Konaté departing on a free transfer this summer.

And with captain Virgil van Dijk set to turn 35 next month, Van Hecke’s relative youth arguably makes him a smart investment, despite the sizeable transfer fee that will be required.

What’s more, with Andoni Iraola set to be appointed as the Reds’ new manager, the 6ft 2in defender would find himself under the tutelage of a coach that operates with a similarly front-footed style to De Zerbi.

But just as the former Marseille boss looks keen to reunite with a player that is tried and tested in his system, the smart money may be on Iraola having the same mindset – and looking to hijack Spurs’ rumoured move for Senesi.

The two players share a number of statistical traits, like their similar record when it comes to completed passes into the final third (9.33 per 90 for Van Hecke versus Senesi’s 9.03).

However, the Bournemouth star is already accustomed to Iraola’s predilection for long, quick balls forward when regaining possession, almost doubling Van Hecke’s attempted long pass count at 13.05 per 90 to the ex-Blackburn loanee’s 7.9.

Though Liverpool are clearly closer to challenging for the Premier League title than Tottenham, a switch to Spurs feels more likely at this stage.

Chelsea connection?

Chelsea know a thing or two about signing players from Brighton – and could be set to do so again, amid reports they could enter a three-way battle for Van Hecke’s signature with Tottenham and Liverpool.

Once more, the appointment of a new progressive coach could work in the 10-cap international’s favour, with incoming Blues manager Xabi Alonso a proponent of high-possession, counter-pressing football.

He also ultilised a back three during his title-winning season at Bayer Leverkusen in 2023/24, suggesting the club may need to bolster their defensive ranks to accommodate a consistent use of that formation.

The West Londoners might be minded to do so regardless, after conceding 52 goals in the Premier League last term – a record that was bettered by ten other teams.

Alonso’s new charges aren’t just short on numbers, they are arguably also short on the required quality of centre-back to regain their spot in the top four.

Van Hecke offers an obvious upgrade and with Chelsea’s proclivity for splashing the cash, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them challenge Tottenham for his signature.

The question is whether he will want to join a club with a recent record of volatility, when the chance to work with De Zerbi at Spurs offers a potentially smoother landing at his next destination.
