Tottenham are ready to rival Liverpool in the race to sign Wolfsburg centre-back Konstantinos Koulierakis, reports TBR Football.
Koulierakis has caught the eye of the Premier League pair despite Wolfsburg’s disappointing league campaign to date.
Indeed, the Wolves sit 12th in the Bundesliga after the opening nine games, and have lost five of their last six league matches.
Even so, the 21-year-old has put in a series of assured performances at the heart of the Wolfsburg backline, with Spurs and Liverpool among those interested in the youngster.
Spurs looking to add defensive reinforcements
Tottenham are seeking to bolster at the back in the New Year with Kevin Danso and Radu Dragusin their only backup centre-back options.
While Danso has impressed when called upon, Dragusin has been absent since January owing to an ACL injury suffered in against Elfsborg in the Europa League.
Starters Micky van de Ven, who joined from Wolfsburg in 2023, and Cristian Romero has also endured spells on the sidelines in recent seasons, with Spurs looking to strengthen in defence when the January window opens.
However, they’d face competition from Liverpool, who themselves are keen to add another centre-back to the ranks at the turn of the year.
Liverpool need to strengthen at the back
The Reds are eager to bring in a new centre-back as soon as possible having missed out on Marc Guehi on deadline day.
Guehi had agreed personal terms with Liverpool but the deal fell through at the 11th hour as Crystal Palace failed to bring in a replacement.
Guehi, though, will leave Palace, either in January or in the summer, but with competition rife for the England international, Liverpool may turn their attention elsewhere.
The Premier League champions did add a new central defender over the summer; however, teenager Giovanni Leoni is unlikely to play again this season having suffered an ACL injury on his Reds debut.
Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano, who is also out of contract next summer.
It could prove a hectic period for Liverpool, who may lose Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid when his own deal expires at the end of the season.
