Former Tottenham scout Bryan King has suggested the club should've sacrificed two stars to sign new Chelsea signing Danny Welbeck.
The 35-year-old striker left Brighton for the Blues this summer. He's one of two players in their mid 30s, along with Jordan Henderson, to head to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Welbeck had been successful in recent years with Brighton, having netted at least 10 Premier League goals in both of the last seasons.
Speaking to Football Insider, former Tottenham scout King has suggested the north London club should've gone after him, sacrificing two of their current attacking corps.
King said: "Welbeck is still a good player, by the way. If I'd have been Tottenham, I'd have looked at him, because he must know him, the manager at Spurs.
"I'd have sooner brought him in as a centre-forward and then got rid of Richarlison or [Dominic] Solanke. He's done well.
"Welbeck's done well. He's scored a few goals for Brighton, hasn't he? Yeah. Good finisher."
Richarlison was the only Tottenham player to surpass 10 goals last season, with Solanke managing just six goals, though he was only able to play 20 games due to injury.
Welbeck a success under De Zerbi
As King suggests, De Zerbi does know Welbeck, having used him for 60 games during his time as Brighton boss.
Only Joao Pedro and Evan Ferguson scored more goals under De Zerbi for the Seagulls than Welbeck (14).
The Englishman is in the top 10 scorers the now-Tottenham boss has used at any club in his career, so there's justification for the suggestion that he should have had a look at him at Spurs.
In any case, Tottenham are looking to improve their attack, and currently have Savinho and Cody Gakpo in their sights.
“I think two, maybe three [new signings]. We have to see,” De Zerbi said of late.
With the defence and midfield already sorted - £230million has been spent there, with big names such as Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Jan Paul van Hecke joining - it seems he's referring to additions up top.
