Tottenham are looking to tie Pedro Porro down to a new deal in order to fend off interest from Manchester City, reports TEAMtalk.
Porro has established himself as a key man for Spurs following his arrival from Portuguese side Sporting CP in January 2023.
The 26-year-old is considered one of the best attacking full-backs on the continent, and he is now Spain’s first choice right-back ahead of the World Cup next summer.
Porro was previously on the City books
Porro’s showings in a Spurs shirt haven’t gone unnoticed despite an indifferent season so far under Thomas Frank, with former side City keeping tabs on the Spaniard.
The Spurs star was on the City books from 2019 to 2022, though he didn’t make a league appearance for the Cityzens, who have also been credited with an interest in Newcastle star Tino Livramento.
Rather, Porro, who was behind Kyle Walker in the right-back pecking order, was loaned to Valladolid and then Sporting, before making the move to the latter permanent in 2022.
City, though, are weighing up whether to strengthen at right-back, which has proved something of a problem position for the Manchester giants since Walker’s downturn in form and subsequent exit.
Midfielder-by-trade Matheus Nunes is considered first choice under Pep Guardiola, while young duo Rico Lewis and Abdukodir Khusanov have both been used in the role in the Premier League this season.
Spurs keen to reward Porro
The north London side are now willing to tie Porro down to a new deal in order to ward off interest from City for one of their star men.
Porro’s current deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium runs until 2028, with the club under no pressure to extend his contract.
However, they are keen to reward his good form in a Spurs shirt, with talks over an extension expected to take place sooner rather than later.
After a five-game winless run, Spurs recently returned to winning ways as they earned a 2-0 home victory over Brentford, and followed that up with a 3-0 Champions League triumph at Slavia Prague’s expense.
And they’ll look to maintain that streak when they travel to the City Ground to take on Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon.
