Tottenham might be forced to make the same Mathys Tel decision Bayern Munich already did
It is truly remarkable how quickly things change in world football, and Tottenham Hotspur fans are having completely different thoughts about Mathys Tel than they were during the preseason when he was arguably the best player in the entire squad.
But the friendlies and the real deal are a different equation, and when it comes to showing his best week in and week out in the Premier League, Tel continues to leave, well, a lot to be desired. That was certainly the case this past weekend against Newcastle United, as Tel was, by far, really, the worst player on the pitch, slowing down attacks constantly and losing the ball almost every chance he got.
It is remarkable how brilliantly Omar Marmoush played all around on Saturday afternoon when he had Tel basically doing whatever he wanted and losing the ball over himself. It was an embarrassing perforamnce, and it is the kind of performance that is so unacceptably poor that it gets an entire organization to rethink everything about you as a player.
Mathys Tel truly may need a loan away
Bayern Munich already loaned Mathys Tel to Tottenham Hotspur in the first place in winter 2025 because they grew tired of his lack of development. They did not think he had the consistency, mental aptitude, or fit for a team looking to win the Champions League, and if Tottenham are wanting to compete at the same level, then they may be having second thoughts about Tel, too.
But Tel has shown more at Spurs than he did at Bayern - and Bayern have been known to give up on good players too soon, like Toni Kroos to Real Madrid a decade ago. Not that Tel is anything even a fraction of who Kroos was as a prospect, but the point remains that Tottenham could feel they can get something out of Tel.
The issue is that Bayern had to loan him in order to give him minutes before he could become something, and Tottenham are slowly coming to the realization that with the likes of Savio, Omar Marmoush, and now likely Iliman Ndiaye coming in on the wings, they just do not have the space for Tel, especially if he is going to play like this an hold the entire team back.
Tel literally cost Tottenham points against Newcastle. He is playing himself into the category where a loan deal is likely the best move, and while there is not much time left in the summer 2026 transfer window, he could easily go the route of Mikey Moore soon if Roberto De Zerbi wills it.
