Tottenham fans can see through the false narrative the media is already planting about summer window

For years, Tottenham Hotspur were unable to compete for the Premier League title due to a lack of spending and, in particular, an unwillingness from Daniel Levy and the board to actually compete with the other Big Six clubs for the sort of elite transfer targets, which are inherently gambles to an extent, that can actually elevate the club to that level.

Now, for the first time, Roberto De Zerbi has pushed Tottenham to do exactly that. Spurs spent 185 million pounds on arguably the two best midfielders on the transfer market this summer in Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, and they are prepared to spend another 150 million pounds combined on a duo of forwards currently playing for Big Six title contenders in Cody Gakpo of Liverpool and Savinho and Manchester City - and that's not even including the potential for someone like Nicolas Jackson or Victor Osimhen to come in at striker.

Already, though, the narrative in the media is turning against Tottenham. While some are praising the ownership and the club for actually spending this summer, many are questioning how can Spurs do that all of a sudden and if the players they are signing are even worth it.

Tottenham's spending is somehow being construed as a negative

It is remarkable how quickly the tables turn, and it never ceases to amaze how quickly the Premier League media loves to go against Tottenham Hotspur, just as they did last season when practically everyone was begging for their relegation just for the pure spectacle of it.

But Tottenham have been selling this summer, too, with Djed Spence, Cristian Romero, and Luka Vuskovic all leaving the club, for example. Obviously, too, they have a lot of money stored up from years of selling more than they buy, as well as a strict wage structure.

There is also the matter of all the revenue Tottenham generate with one of the two most state of the art stadiums in world football, as well as an incredible fan base with a global reach but also extreme dedication within London and the United Kingdom as a whole.

Tottenham fans can already see people trying to poke holes in the positivity of their summer 2026 transfer window, which appears far from over yet, but they aren't buying any of that negativity right now. Spurs have done an amazing job of fortifying the squad, and they have not overspent on the likes of Fernandes and Tonali in the context of their quality and what anyone else would have spent.
