Tottenham fans are missing a huge point with the Djed Spence sale

It will undoubtedly be sad to see Djed Spence leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer transfer window, and whlie his loss leaves a gaping hole at the fullback positions due to his versatility and the total lack of a true backup right back for star man Pedro Porro, if Spence wanted to leave for a new opportunity to potentially start for a club currently in the Champions League, then Spurs simply could not block him from joining Inter Milan. it would not have been right, nor is it great for a big club to block players who want to go.

But while Tottenham fans will miss Spence's personality, versatility, and defensive quality after a great World Cup campaign, there is this notion that Tottenham were lowballed or accepted too little in order to sell Spence. And though 35 million euros does seem very little when fees like 140 million euros for Yan Diomande are flying around, there is a huge difference between a 19 year old future superstar forward and a 26 year old backup fullback. The attackers, especially the young ones, are the players going for massive fees, as are the top midfielders who can control games and add that quality like Tottenham's new additions Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.

Because when you take a deeper look at the history of transfers at the fullback position, you begin to realize that a 26 year old backup fullback from a team that nearly got relegated going for 35 million euros to the Serie A champions is a rarity - and Spurs really were capitalizing properly on Spence's incredible World Cup campaign.

Djed Spence actually went for more than he should have

In the history of left back transfers over the age of 25, no player has even gone for 20 million euros. The most expensive transfer in that category was Giovanni van Bronckhorst from Rangers to Arsenal in 2001 for 13.5 million euros. And even adjusting for inflation, that is still well under 25 million euros.

Flipping over to the right back position, there are more expensive transfers, such as Kyle Walker himself from Tottenham Hotspur to Manchester City in 2017 for 52.7 million euros at the age of 27, Dani Alves from Sevilla to Barcelona in 2008 for 35.5 million euros, and Paulo Ferreira from Porto to Chelsea for 20 million euros in 2004. Both Dani Alves and Paulo Ferreira were 25 at the time of their transfers.

But those three are also three of the best right backs of all time. Spence, in terms of quality, is nowhere near them in terms of quality, which makes the 35 million euro transfer fee look even better for Tottenham. Putting all that into perspective, Spurs fans should actually be quite pleased with this deal.
