Tottenham are teasing a left wing plan that spells disaster for Mathys Tel
The two main transfer targets Roberto De Zerbi has been looking at on the left wing for Tottenham Hotspur and that have been constantly linked to the club are Cody Gakpo and Savinho, and these two are not leaving the transfer radar with literally no other options linked. Bradley Barcola, Ferran Torres, and other bigger names have not at all interested Spurs, with rumors swirling that De Zerbi has Gakpo and Savinho pinpointed as his dream targets. And all along, these are the two players Fabrizio Romano and other insiders have maintained are the two on their lists.
Gakpo and Savinho have totally different profiles. Savinho is a true, out and out winger built on explosiveness, pace, agility, and dribbling skills, especially if he were to play on the left hand side of the attack. And Gakpo is someone who is more of an inverted type, focusing more on playmaking and shooting rather than beating his man, and he could be more of second striker - or even the false nine option De Zerbi signs to replace Dominic Solanke.
Together, Gakpo and Savinho offer experience at the highest level in multiple leagues and two diferent profiles in a platoon on the left wing. And if Spurs were to sign two left wingers, then that puts their current starting left winger, Mathys Tel, in a tough spot.
Mathys Tel has shown he can belong at Tottenham
Roberto De Zerbi has praised Tel effusively on numerous occasions, in contrast to Thomas Frank, who actively held the young Frenchman back. Tel has been arguably the team's most impressive player in the preseason friendly matches, and Tottenham Hotspur would be loathe to put him in a position where he is not getting minutes and developing because he has at least as much long term upside as either Cody Gakpo or even former La Liga Player of the Season candidate Savinho.
You can see why De Zerbi is a big fan of Gakpo and Savinho. Gakpo is always one of the best players at major international tournaments for the Netherlands where he can tuck inside behind the striker more and impact the final score. And then Savinho was beyond electric for Girona and shows flashes of his best work for Manchester City on Champions League nights.
Tottenham should go for these two players, especially Savinho, if their Premier League Big Six counterparts actually offer reasonable fees. But Mathys Tel is here already and was an affordable signing last summer; Spurs would be making a big mistake if their plans don't include him.
