Tottenham Add Marmoush as De Zerbi Seeks More Goals

Tottenham have officially announced the signing of Omar Marmoush from Manchester City, with the Egypt international arriving initially on a season-long loan that includes a £50m purchase obligation. It is the club’s second acquisition from City in a matter of days, following the £85m signing of winger Savio, and gives Roberto De Zerbi another option up front at a time when goals have been in short supply.

Spurs confirmed the deal on Thursday. Previous reports had suggested a structure involving an option that could become an obligation through reportedly easily obtainable triggers, but the announced agreement includes a £50m purchase obligation.

Why Spurs Went Back to City

Marmoush was prolific at Eintracht Frankfurt, which attracted Manchester City to sign him. He has since spent much of his time at City behind Erling Haaland, and his numbers have declined accordingly. Spurs will hope regular minutes can change that. He is a goal poacher with pace, is adept at pressing high and running in behind, and can play either as a striker or a wide forward, giving De Zerbi added tactical flexibility.

The timing matters. Tottenham have needed more end product since Son Heung-Min’s departure. Richarlison has been linked with moves to Saudi Arabia and a return to Everton, while there have been no rumours about Dominic Solanke, who started the previous day’s League Cup win over Charlton and scored Spurs’ second goal.

The Bigger Picture With City

Add Savio’s £85m fee to Marmoush’s obligation and City have effectively moved two players who had mostly been on the bench for about £135m combined. Tottenham, meanwhile, will hope Marmoush can make an immediate impact, as Savio did on Wednesday night. There are still plenty of new faces needing to gel.
