The performances of a French star over the international break will thrill Manchester City
The international break is often when clubs hold their breath over the fitness of their key players. This has especially been the case during this extended international break. Manchester City had a plethora of players who were selected for their countries, which is the norm given the quality of Enzo Maresca’s squad. In the case of Erling Haaland, he is suffering from fatigue which is a cause of concern for City. However, there is the positive that players can hit form for their countries and bring that form back to Manchester City. One player who has hit form for his country is Rayan Cherki. Cherki has shone for France over the international break and hopefully that is a sign of what is to come from Cherki when club football returns.
Rayan Cherki has starred for France over the international break.
Zinedine Zidane has shown full faith in Rayan Cherki since taking over as France’s manager from Didier Deschamps. Zidane played Cherki in a deeper midfield role, which did allow the mercurial Manchester City playmaker to be more involved in games. Getting Cherki on the ball more often can only be a positive. Also, Cherki has now had a taste of what it takes to play in midfield. It would not surprise me if Enzo Maresca also looks at this option at some stage.
Having Zidane show faith in him has seen Rayan Cherki shine for France. Zinedine Zidane’s side played four UEFA nations league matches over the international break. They picked up two wins over Belgium and a victory over Türkiye. They also drew 1-1 with Italy. Rayan Cherki played a key role for France in each match that they played. However, his most impactful performance arrived last night.
Rayan Cherki, alongside Michael Olise, came off the bench for the final half-hour of France’s 4-1 win over Belgium. At the time of their introduction, France were trailing 1-0. The pair completely changed the game as France ran out comfortable 4-1 winners after scoring four goals in the final 14 minutes.
Rayan Cherki scored France’s second goal and alongside Michael Olise and Desire Doue, he helped turn the game. Cherki added the class that France lacked in midfield. The Manchester City man played an important role in an important win for Zinedine Zidane’s side. Cherki’s performance capped off an impressive international break for the French international.
Manchester City will get Rayan Cherki back from international duty full of confidence and in form.
What will thrill Manchester City is how well Rayan Cherki has played over the international break. He looks to be full of confidence and the trust Zinedine Zidane instilled in him was exactly what Cherki needed. Cherki had started the 2026-27 season strongly for City. Hopefully, his play for France is a sign of what is to come from him for Enzo Maresca’s side.
The footballing world is seemingly against Manchester City. There is no other way to put it. Enzo Maresca’s side will have to play through the storm. Rayan Cherki figures to be a prominent player for his team. The outside noise shouldn’t bother Cherki. In fact, nothing seems to phase the French playmaker. He may well be the ideal character to play through the storm. If Cherki continues his impressive form, Enzo Maresca’s side is capable of continuing on their impressive start to the new campaign. The back drop is different, but the task is the same for Manchester City. Winning games is all that matters and an in-form Rayan Cherki will help City exactly this.
Rayan Cherki was in top form for France over the extended international break. Hopefully, that form continues from Cherki for Manchester City. If it does, it will go a long way in helping Enzo Maresca’s side continue their winning run. Cherki looms as one of Manchester City’s important players from this point onwards. He always was, but the form he is currently in does give the impression that there is a lot more to come from him.
