Sunderland secure double deal but winger could still depart

Sunderland have completed the signings of Belgium winger Malick Fofana and Ecuadorian striker Juan Riquelme Angulo Caicedo.

Fofana has joined the Black Cats from Olympique Lyonnais in a deal worth around £30m.

Sunderland director of football Florent Ghisolfi believes the winger has all the attributes required to make an impact in the Premier League.

“Malick has all the attributes to thrive in the Premier League,” Ghisolfi said.

“He is a player with huge potential and Sunderland AFC will provide him with the right environment to continue to develop and prosper.

“He operates off the left and will complement the versatility of the other wide men we have at the club, who can play across both flanks.

“We are delighted to welcome Malick to the Club and look forward to supporting him as he takes the next steps in his career.”

Sunderland have also added further attacking talent with the signing of 18-year-old Ecuadorian Angulo from Independiente del Valle.

The 6ft 4in striker has signed a long-term deal at the Stadium of Light after an impressive breakthrough campaign in his homeland.

Ghisolfi said Sunderland had faced significant competition from clubs across Europe for the highly-rated young forward.

“Juan is a young player with exciting potential and a profile that we believe can develop very well within our football club,” he said.

“There were a lot of big clubs around Europe chasing his signature, so this signing demonstrates the attraction of Sunderland AFC.

“His physical qualities are obvious, but he also has good movement, technical ability and a natural instinct for scoring goals.

“He has already shown in a short spell that he can compete at senior level despite his age, and we are delighted to bring him to Sunderland at this important stage of his development.

“We look forward to supporting him as he adapts to European football and continues his progression with us.”

However, Simon Adingra could depart Sunderland today with Ajax keen on securing the Ivory Coast international on loan.
