Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand feels the club should sign former Real Madrid icon Karim Benzema on a free transfer.

Benzema has often been linked with a move to the Premier League throughout his career. United are one of the clubs he's been touted to move to in previous years, particularly when he was at Real Madrid.

But now 38 and having spent three years in Saudi Arabia, it appears that ship has probably sailed.

With that said, United legend Ferdinand feels Benzema should be signed given he's now a free agent.

He said: “If you knew you had to manage his [Benjamin Sesko] minutes, I totally agree with you. Without him, there isn’t really a focal point.

“We’ve got players that want to come deep to the ball more often than not and get involved in the build-up, and then you lose that focal point out there.

“But if you had somebody up there who could share the minutes, share the load, help in terms of experience, lend that experience to Sesko for him to learn as well, you’d have been getting so much more out of just a signing to go and play the 90 minutes.

“[Danny] Welbeck springs to mind, obviously, so does Benzema. Two players I feel would have added huge value to the forward line that we have.”

Karim Benzema is available

Benzema is looking for his next side after leaving Al-Hilal during the summer. He terminated his contract, and Ollie Watkins was signed to take his place.

But Benzema's departure was over a month ago and he's yet to find himself a new club.

He has reportedly rejected some offers from Saudi sides who would likely to be able to match the huge wages he was on at Al-Hilal.

That comes after the suggestion that, if he's not going to move to another club in the Middle Eastern country, the Frenchman will simply retire.

Fabrizio Romano said on X: 'Benzema will announce his decision about his future soon. Retirement and another Saudi club are the options. A return to Europe is not going to happen.'

Meanwhile, Waleed Al-Farraj has said: ‘Benzema was presented with several options, including a move to Al-Shabab or a return to Al-Ittihad, but he rejected both options, and when the decision came into his hands, he indicated that he was leaning towards retiring from football.

‘Retirement may be an option on the table for him to preserve these roles.'

A move to United is therefore not on the cards, nor is a move to another Premier League or European club.
