Reijnders sale can force Manchester City to pay Milan extra €14m

There are reports Manchester City have agreed the sale of Tijjani Reijnders to Al Qadsiyah, and if confirmed that would be a double financial boon for Milan thanks to a very special clause and City’s impatience.

The midfielder was sold to Manchester City last summer for a fixed fee of €55m plus up to a further €14m in performance-related bonuses.

These bonuses were tied to both team and player achievements, ranging from the simple like Champions League qualification, to much more difficult conditions such as winning the Ballon d’Or.

Reijnders bonus owed to Milan

However, La Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Milan also introduced a clause ensuring that if Manchester City sold Reijnders in the first year after his move from San Siro, then they would receive all €14m of those add-ons, regardless of whether or not the conditions were met.

Considering Manchester City’s impatience to move the Netherlands international on so quickly, with reports they have agreed a €60m sale to Al Qadsiyah, that would mean a big financial boost for the Rossoneri this summer.

There is still a problem, as Reijnders needs to give the all-clear for a transfer to the Saudi Pro League, and that is far from guaranteed.

Nottingham Forest, Galatasaray and even Juventus have also been linked with a summer swoop, so he could hold off and wait for a European club to make a similar proposal.

It doesn’t matter where he goes, as long as the 28-year-old is sold this summer, it will mean a further €14m in Milan’s coffers.
