Reigning champions Arsenal begin the new Premier League season with a convincing win
Arsenal have made an emphatic start to the new Premier League season. The reigning champions brushed aside promoted Coventry City 3-0 at home. Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard got the goals.
Only one Dutchman started at the Emirates Stadium. Milan van Ewijk lined up at right-back for Coventry and got a painful introduction to the Premier League.
After 15 minutes, Van Ewijk carelessly lost the ball in his own half and Arsenal pounced. Riccardo Calafiori stepped in quickly and teed up Havertz, who calmly slotted in for 1-0.
Arsenal's superiority was clear in the first half, and eager new signing Christos Tzolis caused problems. The winger, signed this summer from Club Brugge, gave Van Ewijk a difficult evening.
Saka then made it 2-0. Goalkeeper Carl Rushworth played the ball straight to his feet and the Arsenal winger accepted the gift.
Early in the second half, Arsenal struck again for 3-0. A slick move down the right reached Ben White, who found Ødegaard, and his effort beat Rushworth with a slice of fortune.
That proved the final blow for Coventry, with Gustavo Hamer coming on in the closing stages. The promoted side threatened a few times but could not find a consolation goal. Arsenal fully deserved the win and already look like favourites to win another league title.
