Premier League’s biggest xG underperformers in 2026/27 so far
Chances have come, but goals have been harder to find for some Premier League players this season. We rank the five biggest underperformers by the gap between their goals scored and expected goals (xG), from Phil Foden to Igor Thiago.
5. Phil Foden - Manchester City (-1.59)
Phil Foden has failed to open his account for the Premier League season, despite accumulating 1.59 Expected Goals.
Foden is facing a defining period in his career after being snubbed by England for the 2026 World Cup, as the 26-year-old has struggled to reach previous standards.
4. Oliver McBurnie - Hull City (-1.63)
Hull City will be pleased with their start since promotion, taking eight points from five games to sit eighth in the table. Play-off final hero McBurnie will want improvement, however, having failed to score to date.
3. Thierno Barry - Everton (-1.66)
Thierno Barry had his critics at Everton last season, during a mixed debut campaign for the club. The Frenchman has found some form this season with five goals in all competitions, including an EFL Cup hat-trick at Preston.
However, Barry remains one of the league's biggest underperformers, having missed some good chances. Room for improvement.
2. Evanilson - Bournemouth (-1.83)
Another player yet to get up and running in the Premier League this season, Evanilson has squandered 1.83 worth of Expected Goals in 2026/27 so far.
The Brazilian was the fifth-biggest xG underperformer last season, ending the campaign with -4.45.
1. Igor Thiago - Brentford (-1.88)
The relief on Igor Thiago's face was clear to see when he scored his first goal of the season against Chelsea.
The Brazilian had had a slow start to the Premier League campaign, including a missed penalty against Tottenham Hotspur on the opening weekend. Thiago is currently the biggest xG underperformer in the league as a result, but will hope his first of the season can get him back to 2025/26 levels. Thiago scored 22 league goals last season for the Bees.
