Mikel Arteta and Martin Odegaard celebrate at the Arsenal trophy parade

With less than a week to go until the start of the Premier League season, the focus will be on who will finish top of the table.

Arsenal ended a 22-year wait to lift the trophy in May to finally curtail a frustrating run of three consecutive second-place finishes.

Mikel Arteta's side will now be looking to achieve what Arsene Wenger's great teams from the past have failed to do, and win consecutive top-flight titles.

That is something which the Gunners haven't achieved since winning a third in a row back in the 1934/35 season.

The likes of Manchester City and Liverpool will hope to deny the north Londoners from achieving that historic feat, as we assess the prospects of the leading contenders below.

Arsenal

Arteta's men are the favourites to win what would be a fifth Premier League title, and with good reason.

The Gunners' style of play may not have been the prettiest on the eye, but it was certainly very effective.

Their defence - marshalled by the miserly duo of Gabriel and William Saliba - conceded just 27 goals, while their 19 goals from corners set a new Premier League record.

They have also added to the squad this summer with the £75 million acquisition of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United, while the arrival of Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge is also an intriguing addition.

Backing the north Londoners to finish top of the pile is the most sensible option, but a greater reward lies elsewhere.

Arsenal to win the Premier League - odds @6/4

Manchester City

A new era has dawned at the Etihad, with Enzo Maresca charged with bringing the Premier League title back to the north west.

City finished last season seven points adrift of Arsenal, and have since shown a huge sign of intent by bringing in Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for an eye-watering £116 million fee.

Their 77 goals scored in the previous campaign was six more than the Gunners, with golden boot winner Erling Haaland providing 27 of them.

However, there is plenty of trepidation surrounding Rodri's future, and keeping hold of the Spain captain amid heavy links to Barcelona will be crucial to their hopes of winning a ninth Premier League title.

Should he depart, then it would be reasonable to anticipate these odds lengthening, which would make City an even more worthwhile punt.

Manchester City to win the Premier League - odds @11/4

Liverpool

It’s also the case of a new era at Liverpool, as Andoni Iraola swapped life on the Dorset coast at Bournemouth for Merseyside.

A disappointing fifth-place finish last season spelled the end of Arne Slot’s two-season spell in charge, leaving the Spaniard to fill the Dutchman’s void.

It will be intriguing to see how the Reds develop under Iraola, with established senior pros in Andy Robertson, Ibrahima Konate, and Mohamed Salah, all leaving for pastures new in the summer.

Ronald Araujo's loan arrival from Barcelona is an intriguing one, with the Uruguayan hoping to be part of a first-choice central defensive partnership with Virgil van Dijk.

Dominik Szoboszlai is expected to be the key orchestrator in midfield, while plenty of eyes will be on Victor Munoz after joining from Osasuna.

It looks set to be a transitional period, but could Iraola defy the odds and follow Slot's example by winning the title in his first season?

Liverpool to win the Premier League - odds @5/1

Manchester United

There have been some encouraging signs that the glory days could return at Old Trafford under Michael Carrick, who has been given the manager’s job permanently following a second spell as interim boss.

Achieving an impressive third-place finish after a poor first half of the campaign was no mean feat, but this promises to be a much tougher season for Carrick’s men.

There is the welcome return of Champions League football to contend with, and a much more congested fixture list to boot.

Signing Youri Tielemans for a measly £35 million looks like a very shrewd piece of business, while the arrival of Andrey Santos to help fill the gap left by his compatriot Casemiro, also looks like a sensible addition.

The Red Devils certainly have a formidable frontline in Bryan Mbeumo, Mateus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, while the potential reintroduction of Marcus Rashford adds a new dimension.

At these odds, it could be worth a flutter in backing United to go all the way.

Manchester United to win the Premier League - odds @13/2

Chelsea

Xabi Alonso takes his first job in English football at Stamford Bridge, seeking to recover the wreckage of a dismal 10th-place finish last season.

The Blues are certainly eager to improve in this campaign after backing Alonso with an eye-watering amount of investment in the transfer market that is reported to be in the region of £350 million!

Unlike Carrick, Alonso does not have to contend with the additional fixtures that come with European football.

A return to competing on the continent will be the minimum requirement for the Spaniard, who has seen his squad bolstered by the likes of Morgan Rogers in a £115 million fee paid to Aston Villa.

The Blues have also strengthened their defence by bringing in both Maxence Lacroix and Pep Chavarria, while the additions of seasoned veterans in Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck gives them some much-needed experience.

With a less congested fixture schedule than their rivals, these odds are also rather generous for any brave punters out there.

Chelsea to win the Premier League - odds @8/1

Outside Contenders

Tottenham Hotspur are the sixth favourites in the list @20/1 after some hefty summer spending too, which has seen the likes of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes arrive in north London. Aston Villa are preparing for life without Rogers and Tielemans, and come in at 33/1. The top 10 is completed by Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United, with both priced @150/1, while Bournemouth come in at 200/1.
