A new era begins for both of these clubs with Newcastle taking the field without Eddie Howe in the dugout for the first time since November 2021.

Matthias Jaissle takes charge of the Magpies in what is expected to be a transitional campaign, particularly with the players who have departed too.

Liverpool also have a new manager in Andoni Iraola, who left Bournemouth for Anfield in the summer, with the Reds parting company with 2024-25 title-winning manager Arne Slot after a disappointing follow-up campaign.

Team news

Joelinton will be missing for Newcastle due to a groin injury which could sideline him for the opening games, while Tino Livramento is still dealing with a long-term calf problem.

With Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali also having left over the summer, new signings Lukas Hornicek, Sean Steur, Amar Aladji and Amar Dedic will be hopeful of a debut.

Liverpool will be without Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni for the foreseeable future, while Joe Gomez has picked up a fresh injury problem.

Academy graduate Curtis Jones has completed a move to Serie A champions Inter Milan.

The stats

Liverpool have suffered just one defeat to Newcastle across their last 20 meetings and that came in the Carabao Cup final in 2025.

Newcastle’s last Premier League victory against the Reds was a 2-0 win at St James’ Park in December 2015.

Liverpool won both games last season, 3-2 at St James' and 4-1.

Cody Gakpo scored and provided an assist in the 2-0 victory over Como in the Reds' final pre-season game.

Gakpo has played eight games against Newcastle during his career, scoring twice and registering two assists.

Dan Burn was booked nine times in the Premier League last season, with two of those yellow cards coming against Liverpool.

Prediction

It has been all change at both St James’ Park and Anfield this summer with two new coaches taking over.

Jaissle has arguably the tougher job, considering the Newcastle squad has been decimated this summer with the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

A top-four challenge looks a stretch but no European football distractions may give the new manager plenty of time to work on his team.

For Iraola, he will be determined to get his Liverpool side performing well from the first match as he looks to mount a sustained title challenge.

The Reds have a great record against Newcastle and this should extend on Sunday, given the players who have left the Magpies.

Gakpo scored three goals at the World Cup and warmed up with a goal against Como, and carries a very lively goal threat for the visitors.

With Ekitike sidelined and Mohamed Salah having left, the Netherlands ace is likely to play a more prominent role this season, particularly in the early stages, and he could prove to be the gamechanger for Liverpool.
