Liverpool have stopped the rot and now Arne Slot is hoping his ailing champions can go back-to-back by beating Sunderland at Anfield.

Fresh from their 2-0 win at West Ham, the Reds are long odds-on shots to topple Sunderland, despite the fact the newly-promoted Wearsiders are enjoying a stunning start to life back in the top division.

Team news

Three days after the 2-0 win at West Ham, expect Arne Slot to rotate his side with Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitike all pushing to start against the Black Cats.

Joe Gomez came through against the Hammers but if he cannot do two games in three days, Curtis Jones or Dominik Szoboszlai could deputise at right-back with Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong still out.

Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris could welcome back one or other of Dennis Cirkin and Leo Hjelde after lay-offs.

Noah Sadiki is fit after taking a whack off Bournemouth's Lewis Cook at the weekend, but longer-term absentees Aji Alese and Habib Diarra remain out for the visitors.

The stats

Liverpool have lost nine of their last 13 matches in all competitions.

The Reds have recorded 12 straight wins against newly-promoted sides.

Sunderland's away games in this season's Premier League have seen the fewest number of goals — just nine.

Sunderland have scored three and conceded six in their six away games.

These two teams have between them scored 14 goals — eight by Liverpool, six by Sunderland — from the 80th minute onwards in league games this term.

Sunderland win an average three corners per away game in the league — only Everton average less on the road.

Prediction

Sunderland fans would have been particularly wary of the first week in December when they saw the fixture list last summer, with trips to Liverpool and Manchester City just three days apart.

Most pundits and punters would have had them down for no points from this double header, yet the evidence of the first third of the season is that they travel to Anfield on Wednesday and The Etihad on Saturday with real hope.

Wins might be beyond them but Regis Le Bris' hugely impressive outfit should certainly be expecting to avoid defeat at Liverpool, who are far too short a price given their last couple of months.

The champions' 2-0 win at a poor West Ham at the weekend was just their fourth victory in 13 matches.

They will hope that success in East London transforms their season but Sunderland are unlikely to play fall guys when they visit Anfield.

The Black Cats have won twice on their travels this season — at Nottingham Forest and Chelsea — and drawn 0-0 at Crystal Palace.

They are impressive results and, furthermore, have conceded only six goals in six away games so are more than holding their own.

Sunderland also have a never-say-die spirit, which enabled them to come from two down against Bournemouth on Saturday to win 3-2.
