  • Newcastle remain in the hunt for a European finish

  • Recommended bet: Newcastle to win

Newcastle have had plenty of time to reflect on the derby defeat to Sunderland as the Magpies prepare for Sunday's trip to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace.

Eddie Howe's men suffered a 2-1 loss to the Black Cats prior to the international break, adding to the pain of December's defeat at the Stadium of Light, but a European finish is still a possibility for Newcastle.

The Magpies need to get back to winning ways and they will hope to do that when they head to Palace, who have struggled at home and could be fatigued after Thursday's Conference League clash.

Team news

Palace could welcome back Cheick Doucoure, who is yet to play a game this season, but Eddie Nketiah is expected to miss out once again due a thigh issue.

Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes has seen his comeback delayed due to mumps and he will be missing, as will Fabian Schar, who suffered an infection in his foot and is set for another month out.

Lewis Miley is available after making his return to first-team training, but Emil Krafth and Sven Botman remain in the treatment room.

The stats

Palace have won just one of their last 10 home matches in the league and the Eagles have scored more than once in just two of their last 16 top-flight assignments.

Newcastle have won four of their last six away games in all competitions.

The Magpies have avoided defeat in four of their last five trips to Selhurst Park.

Howe's troops have won the last two meetings against the Eagles, recording 5-0 and 2-0 victories.

Prediction

Newcastle will still be seething after the derby defeat to Sunderland before the international break and Howe will expect a response from his side when they head to the capital.

The Magpies have picked up some good results on their travels, winning four of their last six away fixtures, and they will be fresher than hosts Palace heading into this clash.

While a 3-0 home win over Fiorentina on Thursday was an impressive win for Oliver Glasner's side, they have had little time to prepare for this contest and fatigue could play a big part.

Newcastle have not minded the trip to Selhurst Park in recent years, having avoided defeat in four of their last five visits and the visitors can pick up a precious win in their pursuit of a European finish.
