Chelsea won their fifth and most recent Premier League title back in the 2016/17 season – and, perhaps ominously for their rivals, they did so with a new manager at the helm (Antonio Conte) and having finished 10th the previous season.
Alonso has already tasted title success in his short coaching career so far, guiding Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten domestic double and their first-ever Bundesliga title in 2023/24 – though replicating that in his maiden managerial campaign in the toughest league in the world will take some doing.

A top-four finish should be the target for Chelsea after they fell well short last time around, failing to secure European football of any kind.
The flip side of that is they can focus more squarely on the league in 2026/27 – and only once since 2002 have the Blues finished outside the top four of the Premier League in successive campaigns (in 2022/23 and 2023/24).
Chelsea have strengthened their squad as they had to, and a return to the top four shouldn’t be out of their reach.

If Chelsea don’t finish at least in the top six, something has gone very wrong and, given their track record of hiring and firing, Alonso will probably pay the price.

It’s been 16 years since a Chelsea player won the Premier League Golden Boot: Didier Drogba with 29 goals in the double-winning 2009/10 campaign.
And if any Blues star is going to emulate Drogba in 2026/27, it’s going to be Joao Pedro – who found the net 15 times in the league last season.
That being said, he might need to become considerably more prolific if he’s to compete with the likes of last term’s top two Premier League scorers: 27-goal Erling Haaland and 22-goal Igor Thiago.

Chelsea begin the new campaign by making the short trip to Fulham for a West London derby (Monday 23rd August, 8pm BST).
The Blues lost 2-1 on their last visit to Craven Cottage in January but have won the vast majority of their Premier League clashes with their local rivals and head into this clash as favourites.
Chelsea ins and outs: Summer transfer specials
England attacking midfield star Morgan Rogers is Chelsea’s marquee signing of the summer, becoming the most expensive British player of all time by joining for £117m from Aston Villa.
The Blues have also brought in right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta, winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP and striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg (though he’s already been linked with a move away).
