Nightmare debut: Aston Villa’s Joao Gomes first in 14 years to receive first-half red on Premier League debut
Joao Gomes will want to forget his Aston Villa debut in a hurry after a nightmare first appearance for the club.
Gomes signed for Aston Villa from relegated Wolves in a £38m deal earlier this summer, with the midfielder a welcome addition to Unai Emery's squad.
However, Gomes endured a nightmare debut for his new side at Brighton, receiving a first-half red card as Villa were battered at the Amex Stadium.
Eager to impress, Brazilian picked up an early booking before being dismissed for violent conduct, after kicking out at Georginio Rutter. A shellshocked Aston Villa side were already 4-0 down when Gomes was sent off.
Gomes is the first player in over 14 years to receive a first-half red card on his Premier League debut for a club, with QPR's Samba Diakité the last player to do so, against Fulham in February 2012.
He is also only the second Aston Villa player to be sent off on their Premier League debut for the club after Lee Hendrie in December 1995.
Following his straight red card, Gomes will now miss Aston Villa's upcoming fixtures against Arsenal (h), Hull City (a) and Nottingham Forest (h).
A nightmare for the new arrival.
