Newcastle Transfer News: Who Stays and Who Leaves as Matthias Jaissle Replaces Eddie Howe

Newcastle United dropped a bombshell on Thursday after it was reported that Eddie Howe had left the club with immediate effect.
Howe succeeded Steve Bruce at the St. James’ Park helm in November 2021 and guided the Magpies to their first piece of major domestic silverware in 70 years in 2025. However, a disappointing 12th-place finish saw pressure mount on the former Bournemouth boss.
And following a surprise 4-1 pre-season defeat to Bristol City on Wednesday night, Howe made the decision to call time on his spell on Tyneside.
Matthias Jaissle succeeds the 48-year-old in charge in what’s already been a summer of change for the club. Anthony Gordon left for Barcelona. Sandro Tonali departed for Tottenham Hotspur. And we can expect a few more outgoings before the transfer window closes.
With that, assess who stays and who leaves St. James’ Park over the coming weeks.
Who is Matthias Jaissle?
Firstly, we take a closer look at the man in the St. James’ dugout. Matthias Jaissle’s managerial career got underway in 2021 with FC Liefering, before going on to Red Bull Salzburg later that same year.
The 38-year-old took over as Al-Ahli boss in 2023 as he returns to Europe following a three-year spell in the Middle East. Al-Ahli, like Newcastle, are a club owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
During his time with The Royals, Jaissle won 90 of the 138 matches he oversaw. The German favours a 4-2-3-1 setup and given his Red Bull past, favours high pressing and direct attacking play.
His Salzburg side did dominate matches, however, with Jaissle previously admitting: “You have to develop your game, you have to always make progress.” While an unfamiliar name on these shores, he has the managerial skillset to make a name for himself in England, even if his appointment is a risk.
Nick Woltemade - Stays
Eddie Howe was previously criticised by then-Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann for his utilisation of Nick Woltemade last season. The striker joined from VfB-Stuttgart for a club-record £69m shortly before Alexander Isak left for Liverpool.
Woltemade made a bright start to life in England but ended the season with just eight goals to his name. The 24-year-old had been linked with a move away from the club, yet Howe’s departure and Jaissle’s appointment means Woltemade is now likely to stay.
Yoane Wissa - Stays
Like Woltemade, Yoane Wissa moved to Newcastle last year as the club sought to ease Isak’s eventual move to Liverpool. The DR Congo international impressed in his final season with Brentford, netting 19 times and providing four assists.
The 29-year-old endured a stop-start debut campaign with the Magpies, though, as he managed four league starts. Wissa netted just once in the Premier League last season in an injury hit campaign. A change in manager, however, presents the striker with a fresh start.
Bruno Guimaraes - Leaves
Bruno Guimaraes has been heavily linked with a summer exit. The Brazil international indicated during the 2026 World Cup that he’d be up for a move to Arsenal during the off-season.
Newcastle are keen to retain their captain’s services but Howe’s exit may convince Guimaraes that his future lies elsewhere. The Gunners need to splash the cash to sign the 28-year-old, yet it’s a deal that may well get done now Howe has left.
Lewis Hall - Leaves
Another whose future could be tied to Howe, Lewis Hall is a player that has attracted watchful glances from elsewhere. Manchester United have been credited with an interest in the England international as they consider their left-back options.
Hall, like Guimaraes, is one that the Magpies will want to keep. The exits of Gordon and Tonali suggest could see the defender opt to follow the pair out of the club. With Howe gone, expect the left-back to don gossip columns once more.
Tino Livramento - Stays
Tino Livramento was forced to pull out of England’s 2026 World Cup squad due to injury. That, though, is unlikely to deter potential suitors from making a move for the versatile full-back.
Manchester City have previously cast watchful glances over St. James’ Park as the Cityzens consider bringing in a new right-back this summer. However, Livramento remains sidelined following surgery, and his absence from pre-season so far suggests he may just remain at the club as a result.
Malick Thiaw - Stays
Having been tentatively linked with a move to Manchester United, any talk of Malick Thiaw leaving Newcastle this summer has gone quiet. The Germany international only moved to St. James’ Park last year.
And even after Newcastle’s sub-par season, Thiaw is unlikely to depart for pastures news. The appointment of compatriot Jaissle suggests that the centre-back will now remain at the club despite interest from elsewhere earlier in the year.
