Newcastle have 'big confidence' to sign Nico Gonzalez from Man City in 'next 48 hours'

Newcastle are progressing quickly on Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez and he could be through the door "in the next 48 hours," reports Fabrizio Romano.

The Magpies have lost two star midfielders in Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes. They didn't feel their exits enormously as they went toe to toe with Liverpool on Sunday, drawing 2-2.

But there is a desire to land a new midfielder, and over the last week, City's Gonzalez has become their favourite target.

Romano revealed on X that the agreement was almost done, with big progress made and talks ongoing to convince the Spanish midfielder to sign.

Nico Gonzalez to Newcastle update

Giving further information on YouTube, Romano said: "There is big, big, big confidence at Newcastle to get a deal done in the next hours for Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City.

"Manchester City opened doors to the exit of Nico Gonzalez. For Manchester City the player is not untouchable at all.

"In the Sunday game, the opening game of Enzo Maresca, nothing changed in terms of midfielders because Nico Gonzalez was not playing, was not starting for Manchester City.

"So the message from the coach was quite clear. Manchester City lost Bernardo, Manchester City lost Rodri, Manchester City lost Tijjani Reijnders.

"In this emergency situation waiting for [Ayyoub] Bouaddi, he's arriving [on Monday] and waiting for the new signings, Nico Gonzalez is not even playin.

"It was Marc Guehi in midfield, so the message is clear, you can go. And Nico Gonzalez now understands about the club position.

"So despite Nico fighting to try stay at Manchester City, they are open to selling, and now, Newcastle have confidence.

"My understanding is that the agreement, Newcastle, Manchester City, is at the final stages. And also the conversation with the player is now underway.

"Work in progress, it's not a done deal yet. Newcastle want to be careful until the very end, because it's not been an easy window, Newcastle fans know.

"But Newcastle are working hard on this one and my understanding is that the new coach, Matthias Jaissle, is absolutely involved. Jaissle is pushing, Jaissle is trying to present the project with ambition to Nico Gonzalez.

"Keep an eye on this one because it could be here we go in the next 24-48 hours if all goes to plan for Newcastle United."
