Michael Oliver has been confirmed as referee for Tottenham’s Premier League opener at Brentford, with the Premier League announcing match officials for the first round of fixtures on Monday. James Mainwaring and Blake Antrobus will run the line as assistants, Sam Barrott takes the fourth official role, and John Brooks operates as VAR with Gary Beswick as his deputy, according to the Premier League’s official announcement.

Not entirely spotless

Oliver has shown 98 yellow cards and three reds across those 56 Tottenham matches, so this isn’t an official who lets things slide. He’s also been at the centre of genuine controversy involving Spurs – most notably the November 2025 clash with Arsenal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where a subjective offside call went in Mikel Arteta’s favour and left home fans fuming.

De Zerbi, for what it’s worth, has no specific grievance with Oliver. He’s previously said he dislikes 80 per cent of referees as a general gripe rather than a pointed jab – sensible, given the trouble a direct swipe would invite.

What to watch at the Gtech

Whether Oliver’s appointment proves good news depends entirely on what happens on the pitch come 22 August. If his name comes up after the final whistle, it usually means a big call has gone for or against Spurs – and given Tottenham’s history, few fans will be holding their breath either way.
