Manchester United are keeping tabs on Jean-Philippe Mateta after Aston Villa reportedly saw a £20 million offer for the Crystal Palace striker knocked back, though any move from Old Trafford hinges entirely on space being created up front.
According to The Peoples Person, whose report cites CaughtOffside, Unai Emery’s side had Villa’s £20m opening bid rejected by Palace. The same report, written by Ayantan Chowdhury and published on 29 August, adds that talkSPORT believe United are unlikely to match Palace’s asking price outright.
Why United’s Interest Comes With Conditions
INEOS are reportedly wary of overburdening Benjamin Sesko with competition so soon, and given the outlay already committed in midfield, the co-owners are said to be reluctant to spend heavily on another forward. That reluctance is why any Mateta approach is tied to outgoings rather than fresh investment.
Only loan offers with an option to buy have so far arrived for Joshua Zirkzee, and United have yet to sanction any of them, meaning the Dutchman could still be around come deadline day.
