Manchester United Weigh €30m Move for Dortmund Right-Back

Manchester United are sharpening their summer transfer priorities now that Michael Carrick has been confirmed as the man taking the club forward, with defensive changes on both flanks under consideration.

Carrick led the Reds to a third-place finish and Champions League qualification since taking charge in January, and he will formally be announced as permanent boss in the coming days, according to FootballTransfers. With that clarity now in place, United are pushing ahead with reshaping the squad in his image, and a left-sided defender remains among the club’s highest priorities this summer.

Right-back also under review

While the left side of defence has been the more obvious concern, an intriguing wrinkle has emerged at right-back too. German transfer reporter Patrik Berger claims United are weighing a €30 million move for Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Ryerson, with the 28-year-old Norwegian having racked up 15 assists in the Bundesliga this season.

Crucially, any deal would only materialise if Noussair Mazraoui leaves Old Trafford first, with United viewing Ryerson as a target for their backup right-back options rather than a guaranteed starter. Dortmund, for their part, are not treating Ryerson as untouchable.

Where does that leave Mazraoui?

Mazraoui has hardly been a subject of transfer speculation in recent months, having established himself as a reliable, versatile option since his 2024 move from Bayern Munich. But he has managed just ten Premier League starts all season under Carrick, who has generally preferred Diogo Dalot at right-back, suggesting the Moroccan could be available for the right price.

Juventus have previously shown interest in Mazraoui, and if that resurfaces it could be the trigger that sets a Ryerson deal in motion. For now, United’s more urgent business remains elsewhere, with the left-back search increasingly central to Carrick’s rebuild and midfield reinforcements also high on the agenda.

It remains to be seen whether Mazraoui’s situation shifts enough to make a Ryerson move genuinely feasible, but Carrick’s summer plans clearly extend beyond the left flank alone.
