Manchester United keep major stake in Collyer’s West Brom move

Toby Collyer has agreed a permanent move to West Bromwich Albion, with Manchester United accepting a proposal worth a guaranteed £3m that could rise to £7.6m in add-ons.

The 22-year-old midfielder has agreed personal terms with the Championship side, and United have retained a 40 per cent sell-on clause in the deal.

The move was reported by The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, who detailed the structure of the fee. The majority of the add-ons are said to be achievable, although some relate to West Brom reaching the Premier League and Europe, and to Collyer playing for England.

Why West Brom won the race for Collyer

Collyer spent the first half of last season on loan at West Brom, making 12 appearances in an injury-interrupted spell that also saw Ryan Mason, Eric Ramsay and James Morrison take charge. He then moved to Hull City for the second half of the campaign, playing five games before an ankle injury in April curtailed his season.

Collyer had the opportunity to rejoin Hull in the Premier League but chose West Brom, where he sees the best chance of regular football and involvement in a promotion bid. Middlesbrough also made an offer for the midfielder, but he opted for the Hawthorns as West Brom started the season with two wins from two Championship games.

The numbers behind the deal

Collyer made 13 appearances for United’s first team in 2024-25, at one stage finding himself ahead of Casemiro in Ruben Amorim’s midfield pecking order. United have since made three midfield signings and need to raise funds.
