Manchester United Get Official Confirmation on Haaland Derby Goal

Pro Ref has admitted an error of judgement in allowing Erling Haaland’s 60th-minute winner to stand in Sunday’s Manchester derby, confirming the VAR should have sent Michael Oliver to review the goal on the pitch before it was awarded.

The decision proved the difference at Old Trafford, with Manchester City winning 1-0 despite playing more than an hour with ten men. What Pro Ref actually said

Haaland’s goal came after Josko Gvardiol’s cross struck Patrick Dorgu’s boot, ran past Enzo Fernández and Lisandro Martínez, and was turned in by the City striker. The on-field call was offside against Haaland, but VAR overturned it after finding him in an onside position.

Pro Ref’s statement explained that because Fernández never actually made contact with the ball, any offside offence became a matter of interpretation. Crucially, the body admitted the VAR failed to properly weigh up the likely impact of Fernández’s position on Martínez’s ability to defend, and should have advised Oliver to review the incident himself on the pitchside monitor. Pro Ref confirmed it had contacted Manchester United to acknowledge the mistake and that a formal review of the incident will now follow.

It was the 199th instalment of the Manchester derby, and City had to survive Phil Foden’s 23rd-minute red card to get over the line. Foden was dismissed for kicking Bruno Fernandes in the stomach, though only after United’s captain had kicked him first – a nuance Enzo Maresca acknowledged afterwards while still backing Oliver’s decision to send his forward off.
