Manchester United would have to make Lewis Hall the most expensive left-back in history if they are to convince Newcastle United to sell him this month, sources have told TEAMtalk.

Hall emerged as United’s top target for the position this summer and, despite assessing a number of alternatives, remains the player they want most. We have previously revealed that the 21-year-old is keen on the move to Old Trafford.

However, new Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle does not want to lose Hall, and the club have made it clear they are not looking to sell.

We understand that Newcastle’s stance is so strong that United would need to break the world transfer record for a left-back just to make the Magpies seriously consider a deal.

That record currently stands at £68million, the fee Bayern Munich paid Real Madrid for Lucas Hernandez in July 2019.

United are prepared to test Newcastle’s resolve with just over a week of the window remaining, but we understand a bid in the region of £70million is unlikely from the Old Trafford club.

That makes a deal increasingly difficult, although a formal approach for Hall in the coming days cannot be ruled out as United continue to explore every possibility.

Man Utd exploring Lewis Hall alternatives

Hall has been identified as the preferred solution for the left-back position, but United are also doing extensive work on alternatives.

As previously revealed by TEAMtalk, Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas remains a player they like, although Atletico Madrid are also pushing to sign the Spain Under-19 international.

Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde and RB Leipzig’s David Raum are admired, while United have also watched Fulham’s Antonee Robinson and Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert domestically.

The need for a new left-back remains a priority before the window closes, with United determined to strengthen the position.

For now, though, the Hall situation is proving the most difficult route, with Newcastle’s valuation effectively demanding a new world-record fee for the position.
