Hull pull off opening day shock

United suffered a nightmarish start to the new Premier League season after losing 2-0 against promoted side Hull City. Carrick's team never recovered after conceding twice before half-time in a sluggish opening performance.

Manager Sergej Jakirovic's team defended with ultimate resolve to secure a famous victory, leaving last season's third-placed side empty-handed on opening day. The Red Devils struggled for fluid creative rhythm throughout and created remarkably few genuine scoring chances.

First half blitz puts Tigers in control

Despite being under pressure early on, Hull managed to threaten United's goal through a number of counter-attacks. Ryan Giles whipped a dangerous cross for Oli McBurnie, forcing Senne Lammens into a stretching save. The home side took a lead shortly afterwards through defender Ajayi.

A flicked-on corner fell to McBurnie, whose close-range effort was diverted onto the post by Lammens before Ajayi reacted quickest to fire home the rebound. Nobel Mendy then doubled Hull's advantage in the 38th minute, turning in Regan Slater's whipped free-kick.

Mbeumo misses chance as United fall short

United dominated possession after the restart but consistently lacked a sharp cutting edge in the final third. In fact, Hull came close to making it 3-0 when Cody Drameh's effort drifted just wide of the post.

The Red Devils' best opportunity fell to Bryan Mbeumo when he broke clear on goal, but goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis denied him in a crucial one-on-one. A late attacking onslaught yielded nothing for the visitors as Hull comfortably held firm for three points.

What's next for Man Utd?

The opening-match defeat was clearly a crushing blow for Carrick's side. They will aim to bounce back and secure a victory when they face another newly promoted team, Ipswich Town, in their next Premier League fixture at Old Trafford on August 30.
