Man City Enquiry Could Accelerate Marc Bernal Contract Talks
FC Barcelona are facing growing interest in midfielder Marc Bernal, with Manchester City having made a concrete enquiry about the 19-year-old. The interest could prompt Barcelona to bring forward discussions over an improved contract for the academy graduate.
According to SPORT, City have gone beyond monitoring Bernal and sounded out the possibility of a deal. Arsenal and Chelsea are also reported to be following his progress, although City are understood to have shown the strongest interest so far.
The enquiry comes as City work on rebuilding their midfield. With uncertainty surrounding Rodri’s future and further changes expected in the squad, Bernal has emerged as a player the club believe could suit their long-term project. His physical presence, composure in possession and ability to dictate the tempo have made him an attractive option, while City’s sporting department reportedly view him as capable of becoming a key midfielder for years to come.
Barcelona, however, remain in a strong position. Bernal has a contract running until 2029 with a €500 million release clause, leaving the club in control of his future. There is currently no indication that Barcelona are prepared to entertain offers for the midfielder.
Barcelona are also aware that Bernal’s rise has changed his status within the squad. Despite becoming increasingly important under Hansi Flick, he remains one of the lowest-paid members of the first-team group. The club had planned to open discussions over improved terms after the transfer window closes, but the interest from England could push those talks forward.
An improved agreement would reflect Bernal’s growing prominence while reinforcing Barcelona’s position over a player already tied to the club until 2029. The existing release clause gives Barcelona substantial protection, and the club have no reported interest in selling him.
Flick has enormous confidence in Bernal and reportedly considers the academy graduate one of the biggest success stories of his time at Barcelona. That backing makes it unlikely that the club would consider losing the midfielder.
For now, Barcelona’s focus is on improving Bernal’s terms rather than negotiating a departure. The club had planned to begin those discussions after the transfer window closes, although Manchester City’s enquiry could accelerate the process.
