Liverpool’s €12.3m problem is a nightmare Arne Iraola cannot ignore
Liverpool have made a slower start to the Andoni Iraola era than they would have wished, with the midfield issues that dogged Arne Slot’s final season at the club brought into sharp focus by alarming revelations on Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.
Mac Allister’s form last term came under particular scrutiny, with the Argentine’s level dropping off, leading to him being linked with a move away from Anfield in the summer.
Similarly, Gravenberch has not been at his best, and this is reflected in the Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of the duo suffering an alarming drop.
Mac Allister and Gravenberch take hits
Over the course of the last month, Mac Allister’s ETV has tumbled an alarming €6.9 million.
The former Brighton star is still worth close to €62m, but he was worth €120m at the turn of the year, underlining how quickly the 27-year-old’s form has declined.
Of course, his form is not the only thing impacting Liverpool’s ability to command a big fee for him. He has moved into the final two years of his deal at Anfield this summer, and this is partly responsible for the drop-off in his ETV, which once peaked at an incredible €135m when he was at his best.
Gravenberch, meanwhile, is another to have suffered a dramatic slump in ETV, but the Dutchman’s drop of €5.4m cannot be attributed to his contract situation. The former Ajax and Bayern Munich star has a deal until 2032, so his fall is based purely on his statistical output.
In total, the Liverpool duo have seen their values drop a combined €12.3m.
The implications from Mac Allister’s drop is liable to be more significant given that he is a player who is increasingly likely to be moved on next summer, when Iraola will seek to rejig the midfield.
Given Liverpool’s relative lack of depth in this area, it promises to be an expensive undertaking.
Ekitike sinks but Szoboszlai provides good news
But Mac Allister and Gravenberch are not the only Liverpool players to have seen their ETVs plummet. Hugo Ekitike’s value has dropped €4.7m to €74.5m, though at least from Liverpool’s perspective this can be explained by his injury issues.
In contrasting news in the Liverpool midfield, Dominik Szoboszlai has seen his value climb an impressive €38.7m, which is the seventh-highest climb anywhere in the world. His new valuation is €122.9m.
Szoboszlai is now one of three Reds stars to have an ETV in excess of €100m, with Florian Wirtz still hanging on at €116.5m and new addition Bradley Barcola valued at €103.5m following his summer switch from PSG.
What is ETV and how does it work?
The Player Valuation Model offers the largest, most up to date and accurate database of Estimated Transfer Values (ETV) in the industry.
In association with FootballTransfers, SciSports calculates with their Player Valuation Model the Estimated Transfer Values (ETV) for more than 240,000 professional football players in over 250 leagues. They do this by using a machine learning model that is trained on around 600,000 historical transfers to find patterns in the transfer fees paid for transfers in the past.
In combination with other influential attributes this results in authentic player valuations that are updated every month. Their model is built to best represent the intrinsic value of a player based on historic and futuristic on-pitch added value under free market circumstances.
The information that is considered includes player age, position, performance level, including current level, future projections and current playing time, player experience, league strength and contract situation.
