Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Liverpool have begun talks over a midfielder.

Richard Hughes' time at Liverpool looks to be coming to an end, and there is still a lot to sort out before he can finally walk away from the job.

The sporting director is expected to leave Anfield and join Al Hilal once the summer transfer window closes. If that happens, these final few weeks will effectively be his last chance to put the finishing touches on his work at Liverpool.

And there is certainly no shortage of things that need doing.

Liverpool are going through a pretty significant period of change. There is a new manager in Andoni Iraola, several new faces in the squad and even new minority shareholders behind the scenes. It feels like the club is moving into a different era.

The frustrating part is that the squad itself still doesn't completely reflect that change.

There are obvious weaknesses that need addressing, players who could still leave and several positions where Iraola needs more options. The next couple of weeks could therefore be absolutely crucial.

For Hughes, it is also about more than just getting a few transfers over the line. This is his final opportunity to influence how Liverpool supporters remember his time at the club.

He deserves credit for playing a part in bringing Iraola to Anfield. If the Spaniard goes on to become a success, that appointment will undoubtedly become an important part of Hughes' legacy.

But there is another side to the story.

Liverpool were left with an unbalanced squad last season, and Hughes has to take some responsibility for that. There were big investments and some exciting signings, but the recruitment didn't completely address the holes that were already there.

That is why his time at Liverpool has been difficult to judge.

Some of the players Hughes brought in could still become excellent additions. It is far too early to write them off, particularly when several have barely had the chance to establish themselves.

But football is ultimately about building a team, not just signing individual players. Liverpool still have areas of the squad that look short, and that has left supporters questioning whether Hughes ever fully managed to put the pieces together.

As things stand, there probably won't be a huge outpouring of emotion if he does leave.

That isn't necessarily because supporters think Hughes has been a complete failure. It is more that his time at Anfield has felt a little underwhelming. There have been good moments, big deals and some promising recruitment, but the overall picture hasn't quite lived up to expectations.

That can still change.

Hughes has a few weeks left to address the biggest problems, help give Iraola the squad he needs and get Liverpool into a stronger position before the window closes.

If he can do that, he will at least have the satisfaction of knowing he left on a high.

If not, his final days at Liverpool could end with a feeling that there was always a little more he could have done.

One move he has to sort out before he leaves is the future of Stefan Bajcetic.

The Spanish midfielder once arrived with so much promise but he has been broken by injuries over the last few years.

Now Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool have entered talks with Getafe over letting Bajcetic join the Spanish side.

The transfer guru revealed that talks are ongoing about the conditions of the move, this would suggest it could either be a permanent deal or a loan, or a loan with an option to buy.
