Liverpool news: Fabrizio Romano confirms current stance on Alisson Becker contract negotiations at Anfield
Is Anfield about to witness the beginning of the end for another world-class era?
Liverpool find themselves standing at a critical crossroads over the future of Alisson Becker. The Brazilian goalkeeper recently turned 34, and with his contract ticking down toward its final phase, Fenway Sports Group and the Anfield hierarchy face an enormous decision: do we extend the deal of the best keeper on the planet, or do we pull the trigger on a seamless succession plan?
For anyone watching us week in, week out, Alisson’s quality remains completely undeniable. He has started every single Premier League and Champions League match for Liverpool this season, proving time and again that he remains the absolute brick wall of our defence.
Look no further than the recent 1-0 victory over Bournemouth Ali produced a world-class reflex save to deny Evanilson that quite frankly saved all three points. He continues to perform at the highest level, making the thought of losing him feel almost unthinkable for Kopites.
Yet, as things stand, the clock is ticking. The goalkeeper will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs from January as he enters the final stretch of his deal. Italian giants Juventus registered interest earlier this year, and while those initial April and May whispers never materialised into a concrete bid, the noise from Serie A is starting to grow louder again.
Reporting on the situation, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano provided an update on theHere We Go Podcast with Fabrizio Romano, confirming that negotiations between Liverpool and their long-standing No.1 have currently stalled:
“Alisson is a special situation because for Alisson, Juventus were very interested around April/May. Then Liverpool decided to continue with him also not to lose another leader after Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson and all the others who left in the summer transfer window. So Liverpool activated the option for an extra season 2027.
Now if they want to continue together a new contract is needed. There is no option, no extra option in the contract. So, let’s see what’s going to happen. At the moment, there are no active conversations between Alisson and Liverpool over a new deal. Let’s see. I think there could be movements in summer 2027.”
The European interest doesn't stop with Alisson, either. Reports in Italy indicate that Juventus are mounting a serious push to re-establish their old habit of snapping up world-class talent without paying transfer fees.
According to Tuttosport, Juve head coach Luciano Spalletti and technical director Frederic Massara who both know Alisson well from his days at Roma are keeping tabs on his situation. The Bianconeri feel confident in his elite ability and leadership, believing they could convince him to make the move to Turin even at a reduced wage compared to his current £13 million gross annual salary at Anfield.
To make matters even more tense for Reds fans, La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Juventus scouts were also in attendance during the Netherlands’ international clash against Germany in Amsterdam. Their target? Virgil van Dijk.
Juventus view our skipper as an ideal leader at the back particularly if Gleison Bremer moves on though they intend to assess Van Dijk's physical fitness over the coming months before making any formal approach.
For Juventus, it represents a return to basic principles. The Italian giants used to rule the market, but their free-agent strategy has slowed down recently signing only Zeki Çelik on a free this season, Jonathan David last year, and Paul Pogba alongside Ángel Di María four years ago.
Given the harsh financial realities across European football, mastering free-agent recruitment again is imperative for Juve as they look to build a squad capable of dominating Serie A.
From a Liverpool perspective, this leaves us with a fascinating puzzle. We already have Giorgi Mamardashvili in the building following his arrival from Valencia. While the Georgian international has yet to establish himself as our starting keeper, FSG clearly brought him in as the natural long-term heir in between the sticks.
It is a massive call for the club hierarchy and one that every Liverpool fan will be keeping a close eye on.
