Liverpool move for 'phenomenal' star revealed as €40m bid confirmed

Liverpool were linked with a lot of players throughout the summer.

In the end, they welcomed four new faces to L4 and, while each of these have already had a decent impact, the Reds still haven't managed to break into the top four of the Premier League.

At the moment, they're sixth in the table and find themselves six points adrift of first-placed Manchester City.

Obviously, the fact that they're still unbeaten across all competitions is fairly impressive but, with the international break now upon us, it's unclear how well the Reds' first-team squad will perform when they return.

So, if Andoni Iraola is wanting to ensure that his team continues performing to the peak of their powers throughout the entire season, some changes may have to be made.

And, while he may be happy with the signings that he's managed to bring in, the fact that the Reds made multiple moves for other players proves that the Spaniard wasn't 100 per cent happy with his squad.

Liverpool tried to negotiate a deal with Inter Milan for Aleksandar Stankovic

Liverpool and Inter Milan were like two peas in a pod during the summer transfer window.

From January, the Serie A outfit tried everything that they could to get their hands on Curtis Jones but, since he only had a year left on his deal, they didn't want to pay a huge amount of money.

But, what Inter were initially offering Liverpool was nowhere near enough which is why it took until August for the deal to finally get confirmed.

In the end, both clubs got a decent deal but, within those negotiations, TuttoMercatoWeb have now confirmed that Liverpool tried to negotiate a deal for Alexander Stankovic.

"In Cristian Chivu's Inter there is a footballer who is playing less than others and that is Aleksandar Stankovic, a midfielder who in theory should have been Hakan Calhanoglu's natural replacement," they wrote.

"The Nerazzurri club bought him back for 23 million euros from Club Brugge, but so far he has only taken the field 2 times for a total of 15 minutes and then one wonders if it was the right choice to keep him in Appiano Gentile.

"During the market, Liverpool tried to negotiate Curtis Jones and Brentford managed to put 40 million euros on the plate, but both companies were sent back to the sender.

"That Inter believes in his talent is beyond doubt, but an alternative solution like a loan would perhaps have been more congenial to a class of 2005 who needs to play and have minutes to grow."

Liverpool need to sign a midfielder like Alexander Stankovic soon

Even though Alexis Mac Allister has decided to become one of Liverpool's best players, the Reds could still do with adding another midfielder or two to their ranks.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch have been Iraola's preferred options for most of the campaign but, as they have proven more than once this season, neither of them can play in a double pivot yet.

Both midfielders have just been handed bumper new deals which is likely one of the main reasons why Iraola has been using them but, since Mac Allister and Trey Nyoni are much better defensively than them, fans are becoming a tad concerned.

And, even though Nyoni is clearly a generational talent, since he's still so young, he can't be expected to play two 90 minute games per week just yet.

This is why Stankovic, Adam Wharton or Lamine Camara would be the perfect additions for Liverpool.

Each of their natural positions are as a number six and, ever since Fabinho exited L4 back in 2023, they've never been able to replace him.

Of the lot, the "special" Stankovic would certainly be a solid option but, for now, the Reds' fanbase just need to hope and pray that a massive injury crisis doesn't hit Liverpool any time soon.
