Liverpool in the mix for new £100m-plus splurge that makes no sense

It has been suggested that Liverpool are prepared to once again break their transfer record to sign Rayan.

Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke points to the Brazilian’s £130m release clause, which activates in January 2027.

It’s speculated that the 20-year-old is on the Reds’ shortlist after the club missed out on first-choice right winger signing Yan Diomande to Real Madrid.

Can Liverpool really spend big again?

Where clubs like Liverpool are concerned, with vast sources of revenue available from commercial activity and Champions League football, there ever remains the possibility of the side splashing serious cash in the window.

O’Rourke is certainly correct to note that we’ve been far from shy of doing so, having snapped up Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and, this summer, Bradley Barcola for mega fees.

For supporters, that kind of spending also adds to the excitement around following Liverpool, whether that’s keeping up with the latest transfer developments or getting to Anfield to see the finished squad in action. For those looking to attend a game, football tickets are naturally going to be in demand as anticipation builds around another potentially ambitious Liverpool side.

However, there has to come a natural point where this spree slows down. We’ve already witnessed some downward momentum in that regard, with club sources indicating ahead of the summer that Liverpool’s spending would not be quite as significant as in the summer of 2025.

To such an extent, in fact, that key areas on the pitch were left neglected for the 2026/27 season.

So, in upcoming windows, in which Liverpool potentially need to invest at centre-back, right-back, in the midfield pivot and at right wing, can we confidently say the club will commit over £100m to Rayan? We’re not so sure.

Why would Bournemouth’s Rayan appeal to Liverpool?

The initial appeal should be obvious for all to identify. Rayan is a young left-footed right-sided winger (who can play across the forward line) with a prominently high ceiling

In 15 Premier League appearances last term (in his half-season with the Cherries), he picked up five goals and two assists. After five games in 2026/27, however, he’s scored only one goal in the Carabao Cup and has yet to get off the mark in the Premier League.

So, we ultimately are still talking about quite a raw talent as far as English top-flight football is concerned, which feeds into our early anxiety over the prospect of Liverpool spending as much as £130m on the Brazilian.

More to the point, we’re not 100% convinced Rayan is exactly the profile Liverpool should be focusing on right now. We’ve clearly gone down the route of signing facilitating wingers, albeit Bradley Barcola and Victor Munoz do also offer a clear goal threat.

But Rayan profiles more as a goal-getter than someone who’ll help platform the central striker.

He’s a terrific footballer, don’t get us wrong. But should Liverpool be thinking about spending big, big money on a footballer who isn’t necessarily a fit for our recruitment strategy of recent years?
