Liverpool have held talks in regards to the signing of Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Illia Zabarnyi, reports DaveOCKOP.

Reports earlier this summer suggested the Reds had been offered Zabarnyi by his representatives. The Ukraine centre-back only joined European champions PSG from Bournemouth last summer, but wasn't given consistent minutes, especially in the triumphant Champions League campaign.

A move back to England, where he had a successful couple of years, could therefore benefit Zabarnyi.

It is now reported that Liverpool have held further talks over his signing.

The 23-year-old is said to be a player the Reds could explore signing later in the summer, with his representatives having attempted to move him to Anfield again of late.

There is something of a defensive crisis ongoing at Liverpool currently, with Virgil van Dijk the only fit senior centre-back.

Giovanni Leoni, Jeremy Jacquet and Joe Gomez are all currently sidelined, as are right-backs Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong.

That's seen youth players start some of the Reds' pre-season games at centre-back, with left-back Luke Chambers playing there in the 4-2 loss against Leeds.

Liverpool not expected to sign defenders

It was recently revealed by Sky Sports journalist Mark McAdam that Liverpool don't plan to sign a centre-back between now and the end of the summer.

He said: “Well, no is the answer we are being told. My understanding is that Liverpool will not go into the market to sign a player for the next 4-6 weeks. They’re just gonna have to ride through the storm and then wait for their players to come back and then they will be at full strength at the back.”

Should that remain the stance, it would appear Zabarnyi won't be signed, with Liverpool instead happy with the options available to them - they're simply not available at the moment.

Given the Reds aren't currently pressing with the transfer, it appears something would have to change in their stance for that to happen, tracking with what McAdam revealed.
