Cody Gakpo did not take part in Liverpool training ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid, though his absence is understood to be precautionary.

The Netherlands international was missing from the Reds’ open session on Tuesday as Andoni Iraola’s side prepared for their European opener at Anfield.

Gakpo played a key role in Liverpool’s first Premier League victory of the season against Ipswich, providing both assists for Alexander Isak in the 2-0 win at Portman Road.

His absence from training will therefore be a concern ahead of Atletico’s visit, although Liverpool are taking no risks with the forward and he has not yet been ruled out of the game.

There was better news for Iraola with Joe Gomez returning to first-team training after a spell on the sidelines.
