Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola says Curtis Jones’ departure is an “ongoing situation” as the midfielder closes in on a move away from the club.

The midfielder is in Milan to complete his move to Serie A side Inter.

“With Curtis, it is not official, but it is an ongoing situation,” Iraola said.

“I spoke to him in the first or second training session. I valued him highly as a player. He loved this club, that was very clear.

“But I understood that the outcome was going to be what it has been in the end.”

Iraola also identified the wing positions as an area Liverpool need to strengthen, but insisted any new arrivals must improve the quality of his squad.

“In terms of what we need, there are certain situations that, for me, are clear, especially on the wing because we do not have enough players able to play in those positions,” he said.

“Beyond those positions, I think we have to be open-minded in the market and look at situations that can improve our team.

“It is not about signing a player because we need someone in a particular position. No. It is about improving the squad.

“We have very good players already here, so to improve, you need a specific level of player.”
