Manchester United have thus far failed to make any breakthrough in their contract negotiations with Bruno Fernandes.

This has been a forgettable Sunday for the Red Devils, who hosted their crosstown rivals, Manchester City, in the first derby of the season.

Michael Carrick’s men enjoyed a numerical advantage for the vast majority of the game thanks to Phil Foden’s red card (with Bruno instigating the episode), but they couldn’t capitalise on it.

On the contrary, the Cityzens left Old Trafford with three precious points in the bag, thanks to Erling Haaland’s controversial goal.

Bruno Fernandes facing an uncertain future at Man Utd

Prior to the game, The Athletic’s top correspondent David Ornstein made an appearance on Sky Sports and delivered a worrying update on Bruno’s contract negotiations.

The reliable journalist revealed that the Portuguese international and his international have held talks with club officials in the hopes of extending his expiring deal. However, the two parties are yet to make significant progress on this front.

“Bruno Fernandes continues to be in talks with Man Utd over new contract but there is no breakthrough, it’s said to be an impasse,” explained Ornstein. “United have the option to extend for another year…”

The skipper’s current contract only runs until June 2027. While the deal includes a one-year option, the two parties would prefer to reach a bilateral agreement on the extension.

Should Man United fans be worried about Fernandes’ contract situation

Throughout the years, Bruno has displayed great loyalty to the cause. He turned down immensely lucrative offers from the Saudi Pro League on multiple occasions to remain at United.

So, as long as the Portuguese playmaker intends to serve the club, one would imagine that the parties should be able to reach an accord.

But in the meantime, it should be remembered that Fernandes is already 32. So while he remains the club’s most impactful player, Man Utd must start searching for a long-term replacement, as he certainly cannot maintain his current levels forever.
