Liverpool new centre-back Jeremy Jacquet impressed over the weekend as Liverpool enjoyed a straight forward 2-0 win over Como in their final pre-season friendly at Anfield ahead of the new campaign.

The former Rennes star played the first 45 minutes alongside captain Virgil van Dijk and not only locked down Como’s attack but grabbed a goal to seal what was arguably a perfect debut.

Cody Gakpo set up Jacquet for an easy tap-in which proved to be the final act by the French international as he made way for fellow new arrival Ronald Araujo at half-time who also impressed the Anfield crowd in the second half.

Speaking on his debut on Instagram, Jacquet admitted that keeping a clean sheet and bagging a goal was the ideal start on Merseyside as he left the pitch with a smile on his face.

“My first steps in this iconic Stadium could not be better ! The season can finally begin. 🔴❤️”

Jacquet also received praise from Alisson Becker who had a great view of the youngster’s defending and simple finish as fans begin to warm to the 21 year old who many hope can fill the boots of the now departed Ibrahima Konate.

“Jeremy had a great first half, great on the ball, great defending as well, controlling the space in behind (and) in front of him as well. Great, great performance.”

Fellow teammate Ryan Gravenberch also recognised the impressive 45 minutes Jacquet put in as he spoke to Sky Sports after the final whistle.

“Of course to get his first goal in his first game, I am very happy for him, I think his first action he got the ball and then he slipped away, you know, so he is comfortable on the ball and also one-against-one defending he is doing a really good job, So i am really happy he is here. Everyone loved it, so I am very happy for him"

After Araujo’s impressive performance in the second half it will be interesting to see who starts alongside Van Dijk at the back in Liverpool’s first clash against Newcastle United this Sunday.

What’s certain is that Jacquet and Araujo will be aiming to prove themselves to manager Andoni Iraola in training over the next few days as they aim to seize the chance to pull on the shirt for the opening Premier League game.

It will be interesting to see who Iraola picks, especially after a strong start for both defenders who are clearly keen to make their mark in the team before the season kicks off. Jacquet is certainly one for the future but is already looking the part whilst Araujo has much more experience but only the same amount in the English top flight as his French counterpart.
