Hull City significantly strengthened their squad on transfer deadline day – and Robinio Vaz may be their most exciting signing of the summer.
The Tigers were busy making additions until the window slammed shut on Tuesday night, bringing six new faces to the MKM Stadium.
That rounded off a frenetic few months in the market for last season’s Championship play-off winners, who have recruited 18 players at a cost of around £150 million.
But it was the loan deal of Vaz from Roma that really caught the eye, including a £25.8 million option to buy when 2026/27 concludes.
Here’s why the French sensation could prove to be a key figure in Hull’s battle to avoid the drop this season.
Tigers already roaring
It would have been a lot of pressure on a 19-year-old if Vaz had arrived at Hull as their marquee summer signing.
However, the Mantes-la-Jolie native is joining a squad that has been significantly bolstered since their 1-0 play-off final victory over Middlesbrough in May.
A whole host of big-money additions have flocked to Humberside, including centre-back Nobel Mendy (Rayo Vallecano) for over £20 million, goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis (Olympiacos) for a similar figure and centre-forward Ilyas Ansah – who signed on deadline day in yet another deal to breach the £20 million mark when factoring in add-ons.
Tim Iroegbunam (Everton), Mohamed-Ali Cho (Nice), Christos Mouzakitis (Olympiacos), Lucas Herrington (Colorado Rapids) and Brooke Norton-Cuffy (Genoa) all joined at significant expense, too.
The result is that Hull’s squad is packed with players who look to be of Premier League quality, allowing Vaz a degree of time to get up to speed with an unfamiliar division.
He is also joining a team that has started the season strongly, with two wins from two top-flight games against Manchester United (2-0) and Coventry City (1-0) – as well as a penalty shootout triumph over Stoke City in the League Cup.
There is likely to be a buoyant atmosphere at City’s Cottingham training ground, creating the optimum environment for Vaz to adjust to life in England.
Itching for an opportunity
So why is there so much excitement around Vaz’s potential impact at Hull?
Well, the France Under-20 international really caught the eye during the first half of last season, when he burst onto the scene with Marseille.
The rapid striker registered six goal contributions (four goals and two assists) in just 14 Ligue 1 matches, prompting Roma to part with around £21.5 million pounds to sign him in January.
That move perhaps hasn’t worked out as desired, with Vaz only scoring one Serie A goal against Lecce – though it was a decisive strike in a 1-0 win.
He only played a paltry 205 league minutes, however, which is clearly not enough of an opportunity to make a significant contribution at the Stadio Olimpico.
There is hope that a greater amount of action at Hull City will see him finally fulfil his undoubted potential under Sergej Jakirović’s tutelage.
Clinical on the Côte Bleue
Vaz’s numbers at Marseille in early 2025/26 hint at the qualities he could bring to the MKM Stadium.
Though the tiny sample size – only 373 minutes in Ligue 1 – is a significant caveat, no player in the division scored goals at a faster rate than his 0.97 per 90 minutes.
Even the 6ft 1in forward’s two assists average out at 0.48 per 90, which is the league’s third-best record.
Vaz could have been ‘running hot’ over that period, of course, but an xG figure of 0.56 expected goals per match suggests he was a genuine threat up front – despite that number being some way below his actual goal record.
Meanwhile, his shooting accuracy of 75% was better than all bar two players in France’s top tier, raising hopes the former Sochaux youngster can convert a high volume of the chances presented to him while wearing black and amber.
The proof will ultimately be in the pudding when Vaz starts regularly for Hull, but there is certainly room for optimism.

Whether it’s our ratings system, his underlying numbers with Marseille or simply the ‘eye test’ from watching his performances, there’s every reason to think Hull City’s new recruit could catch fire with Jakirović’s in-form out in 2026/27.
And with years to develop ahead of him, adding an option to Vaz’s loan deal may end up being a remarkably shrewd move by the Tigers.
