Manchester United defender Leny Yoro left a remarkable impression on France head coach Zinedine Zidane, who gave him his international debut on Monday.

The iconic 54-year-old took over from his former teammate Didier Deschamps, who left his post after 14 years of service.

Zidane’s experience with Les Bleus began with an extended international break featuring four UEFA Nations League fixtures.

After a slow start to his campaign, Yoro wasn’t originally called up for international duty, but he became a late addition when Ibrahima Konate pulled out with an injury.

The Man Utd centre-back was an unused substitute in France’s first three games, as they went on to beat Turkiye and Belgium, before settling for a draw against Italy.

On Monday, Zidane decided to entrust Yoro with a starting role in the reverse fixture against Belgium, and the result was largely positive, with the 20-year-old proving to be one of the best players on the pitch.

The two-time world champions conceded from a counterattack in the first half, but a late onslaught inspired by Desire Doue, Rayan Cherki, and Michael Olise ensured the hosts prevailed by four goals to one.

But while his forwards saved the day, Zidane made sure to mention Yoro’s exploits after the game.

“He (Yoro) had a great game today,” said the former Ballon d’Or winner. “I am very happy for him. He did his role very well.”

The young defender was equally delighted with his outing, even though he would have preferred to come away with a clean sheet.

“Honestly, I don’t think I could have asked for anything better. A home match against Belgium, with my family there,” he told Canal + Foot.

“It was a really great game, too. Of course, we would have hoped for a clean sheet, but we got the win, so we’re not going to complain. It was amazing.”

Why Michael Carrick should consider starting Yoro in Man Utd vs Spurs

Man Utd will resume their campaign with a must-win clash against fellow strugglers Tottenham on Saturday.

Since taking over from Ruben Amorim, Michael Carrick has been primarily relying on Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez as his main defensive options. On the other hand, Yoro has received criticism for some of his performances this season.

But after receiving the backing of one of the most iconic figures in football, the youngster will be riding high on confidence, and perhaps Carrick should try to bank on it, especially with Martinez returning late from international duty as he’s set to take part in Lionel Messi testimonial on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Ayden Heaven is another option at the manager’s disposal, although a less likely one given his recent struggles. Moreover, Matthijs de Ligt has reportedly been showing positive signs in training, but a return to the starting lineup in such a crucial game could be premature.
