Frank Lampard reflects on 'good lesson' for Coventry City after Arsenal defeat in Premier League return
Gunners cruise past newcomers
Coventry were handed a harsh reality check on their Premier League return as reigning champions Arsenal cruised to a routine 3-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night. Goals from Havertz, Saka, and Odegaard left the visitors without any points at the start of the season. Lampard's side struggled to gain a foothold, managing only one shot on target and four touches inside the opposition penalty area.
Manager embraces learning curve
Despite the comprehensive scoreline, Lampard refused to be disheartened, viewing the occasion against elite opposition as a vital learning experience for his newly promoted squad.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Lampard said: "It was clearly a big challenge. They're a fantastic team, it was a good lesson for our boys to see the levels. They played like champions. It was a difficult game for us, the experience of it is probably good for us, in terms of the stadium, the atmosphere at the start of the game, and the quality that they have."
Addressing Coventry's blunt attacking display, which yielded a meagre 0.28 expected goals (xG), the manager added: "You'll see more from us than that. Arsenal will beat a lot of teams here.
"There were some bits I didn't mind. The lads deserve better than that. Our support was amazing – the fans understand we lost this game and will learn a lesson.
"Every game won't look like that. This is an Arsenal team buoyed by where they are at. Leeds came here [early last season] and lost, and they stayed in the Premier League. I'm not making any early judgements. We will have to acclimatise."
Incredible rise fuels belief
The Sky Blues' top-flight journey marks a remarkable ascent from the depths of League Two and 17th place in the Championship when Lampard first took charge. However, the North London defeat further worsened the manager's Premier League record, as he has only won one of his last 18 top-flight matches (D4 L13) and has not kept a clean sheet in his last 17 games.
Highlighting the club's progress and collective spirit, Lampard noted: "A few years ago, this club was in League Two, playing in a different stadium. When we came in, we were 17th in the Championship. The boys have risen; the team have risen and the connection with the fans has been amazing. They have been a huge strength for us. They have to remain that way and the lads have to give everything."
Promoted rivals clash ahead
Coventry now switch their focus to their first home fixture of the campaign when they host fellow promoted outfit Hull City at the Coventry Building Society Arena on August 29. That encounter offers a far more realistic barometer for Lampard's men to get their first points on the board and galvanise the home support. Tightening up the backline while sharpening their offensive edge will be paramount to ensure the Sky Blues avoid getting cut adrift in the opening weeks.
