Former Tottenham starter is refusing to face the truth
Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was a huge liability for the club in the 2025/26 season, even though he came into the campaign touted as one of the better goalkeepers in the Premier League. But even in the 2024/25 campaign when Spurs won the Europa League, they finished 17th for a reason, and Vicario was one of those reasons towards the end of the year.
Diehard Spurs fans could see how Vicario was costing Spurs games with his lacksadaisical effort, flapping helplessly at crosses and showing poor handling skills and distribution. The shot stopping was still there, but in 2025/26, the mistakes on the ball and in the air were getting worse, while the Italian international's shot stopping began to deteriorate to the point where he had the worst save percentage of any Premier League starter by the end of the season.
Even though Vicario has been loaned out of Tottenham, he can't seem to understand why he lost his job to Antonin Kinksy and why he was sent packing. The veteran goalkeeper, now starting for Juventus, continues to lack accountability, trying to hide behind vague statements about how things did not work out.
A Tottenham starter who simply lacked merit
Most recently, Vicario was quoted as saying about his time at Tottenham Hotspur last season to Italian outlet Tuttosport, via Hotspur Lane, “I don’t like to talk about the past or what should or could have been done. There were some dynamics that didn’t align, probably for various reasons that don’t make sense to mention now. I want to focus on the present and try to maintain balance in this new adventure.”
It sounds like an innocent enough quote from Guglielmo Vicario, but the reality is that the former Tottenham starting goalkeeper failed last season because of his own lack of merit. He does not want to talk about the past or what should have been done because he does not want to be honest or accountable, even though he is still technically on Spurs books as a loanee to Juventus, that he just was not good enough.
Vicario failed Spurs as a player and as a leader, and that nearly had devastating consequences on the club. He was as responsible as any individual player for Tottenham's malaise and the fact that they almost got relegated, and instead of being honest about that, he wants to talk about "dynamics that didn't align" instead of facing the truth - and the truth is that Vic stunk outright.
