Fabrizio Romano teases surprise new Liverpool transfer
Fabrizio Romano appears to have teased that Liverpool have something up their sleeve. Is a surprise transfer on the way?
Liverpool are signing a winger this weekend. Bradley Barcola almost certainly completes his transfer on Sunday, with a medical set already. The Reds have completely agreed a deal with Paris Saint-Germain and things should be a formality at this stage.
But we don't believe Barcola is the only arrival. Liverpool, for one, look set to lose Cody Gakpo and they still haven't addressed the lack of any right-winger in the squad.
Mohamed Salah's departure created two voids, after all. One for his output, another for his role in the team. Liverpool hope Barcola addresses problem no.1 there - but he's not going to play on the right.
It's why Liverpool have been consistently linked with Ismaila Sarr and Yankuba Minteh in recent days. They clearly want a player who can operate on that flank.
Fabrizio Romano, though, has teased that neither could be the final option.
"Liverpool maintain active contacts with the agents of Ismaila Sarr," Romano told his YouTube channel. "They remain in conversations with all parties involved.
"Let’s see if it’s going to be Sarr or a new surprising option in the final hours of the transfer window."
Now, he never gives a name. And it could ultimately come to nothing. But it certainly teases the idea that Liverpool actually have another name in mind - and that makes a lot of sense.
For one, both Minteh and Sarr are proving ridiculously expensive for what they are. The smart move at this stage, for instance, feels like buying from outside the Premier League, where equivalent players won't cost near as much.
So watch this space. Liverpool may yet do something out of the blue in the final days here.
