Manchester United fans were left perplexed by Ben Foster, who suggested that Kobbie Mainoo should seal a deadline-day move.

At the start of the summer, INEOS were forced to perform a major midfield overhaul as Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s long-term injury left Mainoo as the only natural central midfielder in Michael Carrick’s first team.

While the results on the pitch will determine whether Jason Wilcox and Christopher Vivell made the right choices, most supporters have been content with the work conducted, as the club recruited Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba, all for reasonable prices considering the market.

Ben Foster thinks Man Utd should loan out Kobbie Mainoo

With the midfield overhaul finally sorted, United can shift their attention to other departments on the summer’s transfer deadline day, mainly signing a new left-back to support Luke Shaw, and replacing Joshua Zirkzee with a new striker.

However, Foster thinks INEOS should revisit their midfield by making a surprising decision, suggesting that Kobbie Mainoo should be loaned out to gain more playing time and experience.

“Ok lemme clarify, I Love Kobbie, he’s the future, but he’s not there yet,” posted the former Man Utd goalkeeper on his Threads account.

“Be honest with yourself and you’ll know he’s not gonna be one of the first 4 or 5 names on the team sheet.

“If he can get a year out on loan where he is the main man… Where he is needed and relied upon every single game to drag a team through a Premier League season, that will instil something in him that he won’t get at Man Utd.

“He’ll understand what it takes and then he can become a leader and have people look up to him. Then he’ll be ready to dominate for Man Utd.”

Needless to say, advising the club to send away one of the most beloved Man Utd players didn’t sit well with the majority of the fans.

Renowned Man Utd supporter Adam McKola was quick to slam the 43-year-old’s ‘horrendous’ take, reminding him of how important Mainoo has been for Michael Carrick.

Mainoo is already a key player for Carrick & Man United

While Foster is insinuating that Mainoo is in dire need of playing time, the reality is drastically different.

This was certainly the case during Ruben Amorim’s spell at the club, which almost pushed the 21-year-old out of Carrington last summer.

But luckily for the England international, the Portuguese manager left at the start of January and has been almost omnipresent in Carrick’s starting lineup ever since.

Moreover, Mainoo was considered by many to be the most influential player on the field in Man Utd’s 5-2 win over Ipswich. Luke Shaw praised his young teammate for his ‘phenomenal’ performance as he orchestrated the play in the middle of the park, while also doing the dirty work in the defensive phase.
