Everton came ‘really close’ to signing Bayern defender
Everton came “really close” to signing Bayern Munich right-back Sacha Boey during the summer transfer window.
Boey joined Bayern in the January transfer window of 2024, and has made only 37 appearance for the club, scoring one goal.
The 25-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Galatasaray, where he made 17 appearances, scoring two goals.
Sacha Boey: Failure to move away from Bayern Munich
Bayern officials made it absolutely clear that they wanted to offload Boey.
The German giants have enough depth and options in the right-back areas, and Boey has dropped down the pecking order as well, behind Konrad Laimer and Josip Stanisic.
Boey was linked with a move to Hamburg and Fulham, and despite Galatasaray link, the interest quickly died down.
Christian Falk has exclusively told CFBayern Insider that Everton were really close in brokering in a deal with Bayern after talks were held.
Falk said: “There was interest in Sacha Boey from Hamburg and Fulham. But I can tell you that the most concrete interest came from Everton! Everton were really close.
“There were talks with the side of Bayern Munich, with Max Eberl, but in the end, the Toffees decided for Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Lille on deadline day. This was hard for Bayern Munich, as they really thought they could offload the player.
“So, Bayern Munich now have to look and see if there’s an opportunity to move the player on to a club in Turkey or Saudi Arabia, where the transfer market still remains open (until Friday). But Everton would have been the big hope for FC Bayern in terms of getting a deal for Boey. In the end, the deal was off.”
Sacha Boey: What happens now?
Christoph Freund has already indicated that if Bayern cannot find any potential suitor for Boey, the defender will be integrated into the squad.
He said: “The likelihood is now higher that he will stay here. He has always behaved impeccably. We had a different plan, but that’s football. If all markets are closed and he stays here, he will remain a player in our squad.”
Boey would have been a fantastic signing for Everton, but as it stands, his chances of leaving the German giants is very slim.
