Djed Spence Tottenham Exit: Five Right-Backs Spurs Could Target to Replace World Cup Star

Djed Spence is on the cusp of leaving Tottenham Hotspur for Serie A champions Inter Milan as a replacement for Denzel Dumfries. It’s a surprise exit for the England international, who ultimately proved to be one of the Three Lions’ star players at the 2026 World Cup.

Ultimately, though, the decision was up to head coach Roberto De Zerbi. Spurs have handed the Italian the keys this summer, and if the former Marseille boss doesn’t want you, then you can expect to be shown the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium exit.

Spence, despite his solid showings in North America this summer, is no exception. Spurs are now expected to pursue a replacement for the former Middlesbrough man. The question now is whether the club opt to push for a designated right-back, or a full-back that can operate on both flanks.

Here, we’ve picked out five full-backs that Spurs could target in order to replace the 26-year-old.

Daniel Munoz

Able to play at both right-back and right wing-back, Daniel Munoz is a Premier League experienced option for Tottenham Hotspur. The north London side are reportedly interested in the Colombia international.

While Crystal Palace would be reluctant to cash in on Munoz, at 30 years of age, they may not get a better chance to sell the former Genk star. He’d offer a slightly different attacking threat to current first-choice right-back Pedro Porro, but the Colombian would be an effective alternative to the World Cup winning star.

Tino Livramento

Newcastle United have endured a summer to forget. They’ve lost Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes. Joelinton has also been linked with a move away from St. James’ Park. The Magpies have been rejected by Johan Manzambi and former Spurs man Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The fans would be enraged if they ultimately sold one of their two flying full-backs. Tino Livramento, though, would be a handy replacement for Spence. Homegrown and able to cover both flanks, it’s a move that would make sense.

Guela Doue

Were Tottenham happy to cast their net beyond the confines of the Premier League, then they could do a lot worse than target Strasbourg’s Guela Doue. The Ivorian, older brother of Paris Saint-Germain winger and one-time Spurs target Desire, is a more defensive-minded option.

However, he’d afford a little more resolve at the back. Capable of playing at centre-back, too, he’d provide sufficient cover in two key areas. The 23-year-old is quick off the mark and aggressive in his defensive approach, he wouldn’t look to barrel upfield in the same vein as Porro or Munoz, but he’s an effective distributor and one whose versatility would enable De Zerbi to play a three-man backline if required.

Givairo Read

Nottingham Forest failed in their pursuit of Givairo Read, who now looks set to remain at Feyenoord. Conversely, he’d be a fine pick up to replace Spence at right-back. Manchester City have also been credited with an interest in the 20-year-old, though look to have turned their attention elsewhere.

Even so, Read is a modern-day right-back capable of overlapping down the flank or inverting into midfield to help dominate in a key area. He also wouldn’t cost a significant amount to lure from Feyenoord, who were reportedly holding out for £25m for Read. At this stage, a move for the 20-year-old would be logical.

Andrea Cambiaso

Andrea Cambiaso is better-suited at left-back, but like Spence; he’s a player who can cover both full-back roles. The Italian was linked with a move to Manchester City last year, however City have cooled their interest in the 26-year-old.

Juventus are in no position to sell Cambiaso, even if they failed to secure a Champions League finish. He’d offer attacking alternatives depending on what side he starts on, favouring to hog the touchline on the left, while inverting from the right. Two-footed, he’d be a standout candidate should Spurs approach a non-Premier League based full-back.
